    Can you ID this mic?

That's kind of how I saw it Rich - people at the start of their career with growing to do - that said, It was a VERY long time ago she was in Miss Saigon as a newbie. The girl in the video has a good voice on the recording, but not really stand out in the crowd. Loads of people are this standard...

Vocal and guitar mixing and mastering

With an acoustic guitar and vocal - many of the categories for comment are difficult. It's not really a mix with just two sources, just one balanced against the other. Personally I hate compression on this kind of music, because it rarely needs it, as you're going for realism rather than...

What’s a good laptop for production

Never worked for me. My mac mini has loads of external storage, but despite my best efforts, far too much stuff requires being on the internal drive. So annoying. Spent ages last night trying to make more space. No huge files, just crazy numbers of smaller ones. Cubase now needs lots of space...

    Can you ID this mic?

Sorry. I would need to hear her in an audition room, live. Lots of the colleges churn out nice singers, but can she sing two shows a day for months? Nowadays, newcomers for dance and MT do showreels which get them access to the audition room, but until they have the MD and just a piano, you...

What’s a good laptop for production

While I now have lots of macs of all ages, my most recent computer for audio and video was a PC - Macs infuriate me because of the HUGE premium price for decent size hard drives. My old macbook won't upgrade because the drive has not enough space, and this macbook is now giving me storage space...

    Can you ID this mic?

Well - one of the good examples of this particular song is this version by Lea Salonga who I first heard in the original Miss Saigon. You will also see hear throat muscles working very hard in the crescendo - something missing from the video. Nothing in this video rings warning bells at all -...

What’s a good laptop for production

In honesty, very few latest laptops of any kind will not be fine. All now have pretty decent processors and with plenty of ram you are away. Most people end up with lots of externals hanging on. Drives with big capacity are vital when your samples, vsts and other stuff takes up huge space. On...

Got banned/restricted on distrokid for no reason

Dont forget that the meta organisation who are linked to facebook and others now have a ban on certain music styles, so when distrokid and others submit the music, they get rejected. Classical, repetitive, whale sound, noises and other material are now on the naughty list. I wonder if it...

    Can you ID this mic?

I use Spectral Layers, from Steinberg. Does a pretty decent job on most music. Splits off vocals, drums, bass, piano and bass, but can be tweaked quite a lot. It can do lots of things, creating stems just one of them. I use it sort of in reverse when creating backing tracks for performers. I...

    Sound

Apple computers do tend to have generic drivers for most devices but all clever stuff needs drivers. Do a search for Mac drivers for any music product and the well known names pop up. The universal driver for audio usually works but latency values are normally poor.

Which format for broadcasting etc wav or mp3

uncompressed is always better than mp3 or other compressed formats - If you export from adobe in the formats people have mentioned, reaper will be able to open it in the uncompressed format - which will also hopefully load in some of the cleverer stuff as well. In practical terms, I might just...

Got banned/restricted on distrokid for no reason

Won't hurt to stay, but I'm with multiple aggregators now. The best ones for generating me money are songtradr and sounddrop - on purely tracks vs payment, soundrop is the winner, so now I treat them as the one to be very careful with, others like record union get my releases that could...

iPhone 16 (emergency) capability in remote audio project...

Clients who ‘know’ would get it. However, clients who only see money, will equate ANY phone with cheap. Swap the phone for a MacBook and that would get over that, and genuinely be a more useful backup.

    Adam audio a8h???

Well, yes. However, they need good studio acoustics. As nearfields the room is perhaps not quite so important, hence why they sell a left and a right, so they mirror image properly.

    Sound

Welcome to how audio works. What is ‘real’? Have you not noticed that the same sound, is different when you move location. Your guitar played outside, sounds different from in your bathroom, and different from in your car? Acoustics works quite strangely. Outside, the sound from your guitar...

    Adam audio a8h???

I have some Adam monitors. I couldn’t quite justify two grand on a pair, for what I’m using them for. I bought mine because the 77 twins my friend put in the studio I built for him had a good experience. I still have a pair of very elderly 8” celestions in my other studio. The Adams sounded very...

    Can you ID this mic?

No point continuing we do not know anything. I cannot convince you and that’s fine. If I was sitting in the audition room and that’s something I hate, my spider senses would be tingling. I will leave you to it! It’s the greystones kids band again.

    Can you ID this mic?

Wobbly is a perhaps British description of a singer with excessive vibrato, that is frequently unable to be controlled, unless the person has been trained properly to master it. As I mentioned, I have for many years now worked with skilled and trained singers and that particular piece I first...

Full Circle - Latest track from my upcoming album - (Big Pink Floyd influence)

I like that - and will cheerfully keep an ear out for more. Oddly, I didn't pick up Pink Floyd, but something I have heard tugs at my brain. That's good I think.

    Can you ID this mic?

Here is the isolated mic - does that sound like the room we can see? Magic mic? She has a rather wobbly voice but some notes are realistically flat but others, like the high one are extremely precise. Also watch for the plosives, especially T sounds the mic captures, they don't all match the...
