    Operating level and tape characteristics

A sweep might be difficult - I'm using Audacity on a Macbook to generate the tones. I did try 1kHz as well as 5 kHz and even higher. From 440 to 1 kHz it was dead flat, i.e., no change in results at 440 or 1k.

    Operating level and tape characteristics

(fourth(?) in a series of stupid newbie questions that are specific to Analog - tape, etc.). So, having my deck back from service for a couple of weeks, I tried something out. It's supposedly set up for a 185 nW/m operating level. I recorded a 440 Hz tone at 0 Vu. On new Quantegy 406 it...

    Paper or plastic?

We've all heard that phrase before. I'm talking about leader tape, though. What do you use? Why? I'm new, and need supplies. I'm leaning towards paper. I don't like the static cling of poly; I like the idea of higher friction on threading onto a takeup reel. I'd appreciate input on this.

Splicing tape substitute, in a pinch?

Ok Thanks, and apologies to dodgeaspen; I did not mean to be rude or offend. Anyway, yea, I need supplies - splicing tape, leader tape, hold-down tape. Just can't decide what kind, where to buy, etc.

Splicing tape substitute, in a pinch?

[edited to remove light-hearted attempt at humor] What I meant in the original post was, given that one's supply of splicing tape is depleted, and since no retail outlet anywhere in the vicinity carries it, and you really, really want to splice some leader onto a tape, and want to do it before...

Splicing tape substitute, in a pinch?

Is there any household adhesive tape one could use when out of splicing tape? I mean, is Scotch invisible better than masking tape?

Teac A-3440 partial disassembly help please

Interesting, the service manual for the 3440 is not a repair manual; it doesn't tell how to troubleshoot, repair, or even disassemble most part of the unit. The parts manual is helpful, in that it has exploded vies, but there's no explicit disassembly guide. What I need to determine is, what...

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

Don't try this, but... ...way back when, when we suspected a short that we couldn't find in a system, we'd connect a high-current power supply and burn it out! Sometimes we'd shut off the lights and get a bunch of guys, all assigned to watch a certain part of the system as the power was...

Lot code or date code of Quantegy? How does one read the lot code or date code of Quantegy tape? I bought some and the only thing on the label that could be such is "2000319." Thanks, jv

Rolling or rotating lifters and arms?

(Second in a series of stupid newbie tape questions): Why don't tape deck lifters and tension arms have rotating contact surfaces? Is it because of potential flutter issues? Is it because of magnetization issues? I think rotating contact surfaces would last much, much longer, and would...

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

Question What country are you in ? :) I know your profile says Pacific Northwest, but you usually don't hear Americans say "mains." I'm not entirely clear on your set-up here. I assume single phase power in a household environment - 120 or 240 VAC? Is it a single voltage or dual (120/240)...

    Stupid newbie questions

Thanks, and more... Thanks, Steve, for your interest. A correction - the tape marked "half track" does, indeed, have something on the "other side." So, it has program material across the tape. Channels 1 and 2 seem to be the same, i.e., mono, with channel 1 consistently about 1 Vu lower than...

    Stupid newbie questions

I was going to post this in the newbie forum, but it's very specific to analog. I just got my first tape deck. I bought some used, old tapes - one is a 10" reel 3M tape from the '50's, in the box, with classical music on it - maybe recorded off the air. The question is, what are the...
