You need your "stereo" (which is really just two mono sources panned wide - that's important to note - although in many cases it's a single source with effects that simulate another source via time and modulative effects) guitars to sound more "different." Certainly - double-tracking (playing...
If the mix doesn't sound pretty much how you want it *in the mix* then work on that first. "Putting the cart before the horse" and all that stuff. Mastering isn't a plugin - It's a process. And 98% of that process is an EQ and a compressor (which you already have).
One bit of wisdom --...
Mid-side *recording and mix processing* are one thing. Mid-side EQ is something different. One gives you unusual control over the apparent space. The other lets you EQ the mid or side signal.
I would add "nothing done for the sake of apparent volume."
I do a decent amount of stuff for this purpose. There may be a decent amount of processing going on - But the dynamic range is always what best serves the mix -- Not what seems "commercially competitive" (for lack of a better term)...
Depth. That's the answer.
Ever notice how the same person saying the exact same thing in the exact same way sounds totally and completely different if it's said 1" from your ear, 1' from your ear, 1 yard from your ear or 3 yards from your ear? Depth.
Record everything "direct" (or only...
I do a fair bit -- Nothing huge (well, I had a bit during the next to last Parks and Rec episode which was technically a commercial, but part of the episode nonetheless), a lot of gaming stuff, LOTS of local PSA goofiness, used to do a lot of music store and a half-zillion radio spots...
Heh... I pulled a few strings and burned some favors getting the very first Tascam DV-RA1000 in the area. I figured for sure it was going to be the industry-changer.
I think I've had 3 projects come in that format. And 2 of them were terrible sounding things. I'm sure they were the best...
I have one. That's about all I have to say about it. I've used it to record live to 2-track (it's fairly bullet-proof in that regard) but otherwise, it's a paperweight I guess. Haven't touched it in some time.
This is why [A] room treatment is so vital and [B] most classic vocal mics are dynamics (no matter what the marketing people might try to suggest).
That said, those isolation shields help some (some). But treating the space helps more.
I sold them one of my Massenburg 8200's! Got rid of them because they wouldn't match up as well as I liked. GML told me they (I had 2) were "in spec" and I told them that their "spec" was unacceptable for a $5k EQ. As a sidenote, I *did* tell Sound City why I was selling and they didn't care...
And another thing ---
(oh lawd, here we go...)
No doubt, just because something is very expensive, it doesn't make it awesome - or right for you.
Back when I was a wee bit younger, I used to have a job doing interior repairs on various vehicles. Mostly cars, some boats and private...
I'm going to make an assumption that you have [limited experience] with high-end gear and/or [limited experience] in this particular field. Because it takes [A] experience at the craft *AND* [2] experience with the gear to actually acquire the appreciation for the gear.
No one is suggesting...
I can't see myself knocking anyone for spending a bundle on the good stuff. I've made my opinions known on occasion where arguably "poor judgement" was involved (spending $2500 on a mic and listening on $500 "monitors" is usually that type of thing) and I'm not one for "snake oil" (my...
Backstory first in case anyone doesn't get it -- MFiT / iTunes Plus is an *additional* release made from 24-bit files that have been QC'd using various Apple tools. The engineer creates AAC files using the same algorithm as Apple then those files are checked for intersample clipping, again...
Mr Average pretty well spelled it out. MFiT is a process - sort of. It's definitely NOT related to a CD master (such as a DDP fileset). It's not rocket surgery, but it's fairly -- particular.
It also has nothing to do with releasing a recording on iTunes (which also has nothing to do with...
