    Original jangle-pop song needs help

Hi all, I've been working on a new song ("Stars Inside") - sort of jangle-pop/rock. Unfortunately I suspect the mix needs lots of work. My monitors tell me the mix is really treble-rich and harsh, while my headphones tell me it's muddy and dull. Maybe it's both?! I'm specifically wondering...

    A piano and strings song

It's a pretty song, but it felt a bit plodding by the mid point. Maybe a faster ostinato synth part could give it some more energy? The vocals sound pretty good (esp the harmonies) but I heard some chair noise on the mic about halfway thru. Nice job.

Can you tell me if this mix is okay?

It has the laconic, deadpan delivery that I always liked about Beck. Not a fan of the of mic distortion - it sounds like a clipped digital signal. If you want the vocal distortion you should find a tube overdrive effect to mellow it out. The vocal in general has an "old fashioned telephone"...

EDM meets Indie Pop (!)...Pretty crazy song

Not really my style of music but the mix sounds good for EDM. The vocals are little muffled, like they are missing some high end/air. And the singing is a little pitchy in places. Thanks for posting.

'never grow old' and 'too late'

Hi - I listened to Too Late. I like the way the guitars intermingle, and the background "aahs" give a nice ethereal vibe. The main "riff" or melody is pretty cool. I wasn't a fan of the bass - it sort of meandered like another guitar line; would have preferred if it had anchored the groove...

Need help pointing out any flaws because it ain't easy :D

The mix sounded good to me, although I'd turn the acoustic lead up a bit and maybe EQ it so it stands out more. The electric lead is really dry - but I'm guessing that's the sound you want, and it does help the lead lines to stand out.

Mirror, Mirror, in the dark.. (Known as, Beppe)

Interesting song, and very catchy. For some reason the vocals remind me a little of the Kinks (who I like alot). As others have said the vocals need a little air, and maybe a cut in the low-mid area. The synth at 2:00 is pretty loud and buzzy. There's a mike bump or something right at the...

Winter - song that supposed to make you think of winter anyway

Listened on headphones. Neat composition with a lot of tricky rhythm bits. The addition of the acoustic is a nice way to end the piece, although I'm not sure the wind effect at the end is really needed. The mix sounds very good to me. I might have preferred a little less rattle and high-end...

FINISHED!!!! ? Softdance by Pygmy Beat

Yes, good song, with a really energetic rhythm guitar part. I like the sax solo - offers a nice contrast with the guitars. The vocals sound a little muddy or dull to me - I wish there was a bit more high end to them. Congratulations on finishing off an old song - doing that is always a bit...

    Original Song For Mix Critique

Yea, I like it. Nice easygoing groove. I concur with CMolena that the guitars and vocals are a little crisp, maybe lacking in warmth. But otherwise it sounds great.

DBSTRD - Air (Swedish indie pop)

Overall the mix sounds fine to me. The vocals are little low and buried, but that's probably part of the style. There's some weird fret(?) noise in the breaks at 1:10 and 2:10 - that should be cleaned up. Or if it's an intentional "effect" I'd drop it. It's a nice song. In terms of...

New original mix - Child of the Elements

I love this. The reverby, swamping instrumentation is perfect for the song, and really gives it a lot of character. The low background vocals toward the end are a great touch. The singing sounds very good - only thing I noticed was a bit of pitchiness at 1:50 where you go for the higher...

Surf Rock Tune - Recorded Live

Cool tune - you definitely captured that surf vibe (although without boatloads of the customary tremolo). The playing is great and I like the '60s organ a lot. The drums sound "distant" to me. A little muffled and "lo fi". The stereo imaging could be wider - sounds almost mono. But maybe...

    Helpless in the Sea

I really like this. As others have said, it's a complex piece, because it's constantly changing and doesn't follow a "standard" pop structure. But it flows well, and each part is well crafted, and well sung. Some minor comments on the mix... the drums are very mid-range "Casio" sounding - I...

    Bright Eyes And Summer Skies

I think I listened to the newest mix (the link in the first post). The chorus is nice - catchy and evocative. I'm not sure I'm hearing any bass on this - or is the bass the keyboardy thing panned to the left? Somehow I'd prefer it with a more prominent, flowing bassline. The keyboard is...

    ANDROMEDA dark original acoustic piece

Very dark and eerie... some bits reminded me of Pink Floyd, but other bits reminded me of something grungier. Great mood setting. The doubled vocal has a nice, but there are a bunch of pops, breath noises, mic bumps, etc that could be cleaned up. The vocal level is a little uneven also -...

    Any Flavor You Like....Take 2.

Yeah the whole thing sounds good to me. I like the low-fi interlude, and it provides a nice contrast when the guitars return. The doubled vocals & harmonies work well. I just bought an Epiphone G400 Pro (SG copy) - love that guitar! I'm sure the Gibson is much nicer, but I've sworn off the...

    Please give it a listen

I listened to "Awaken". It's a nice piece - maybe a little reminiscent of some of the Windham Hill "new age" recordings from the '80s (although the synth adds a different element). The strings are problematic - they don't have the right decay & release - they just sort of stop abruptly at the...

    Better Off Dead

Some good stuff here. I guess most of my critique is geared to the arrangement and composition rather than the mix. The intro guitar riff is completely funky and cool - very Hendrix circa Cry of Love. But the refrain feels like a bit of a let down - it moves from funky and energetic to heavy...

    Happy Sober (Indie Rock)

Yeah, sounds great. You have a good voice. It's a very pristine recording & mix - has a great '90's feel.
