The idea is to have as less bit depth conversions as possible. A huge number of VST plugins work in 24 bits. So it makes sense to record with 24 bit also and then finally when the track is ready to be burned convert it to 16 bit/44,1kHz.

You are right. After preamp everything has to be line level connection. Actually you can also connect thecompreesor to preamp line out. Just make sure that standard levels are the same, +4 dB on the output and -10dB on the input will not work.

Yes you are correct this will give 8 outputs. The only thing that warns me in the specs that the signal to noise is 80 db. quite noizzy IMHO.
Check this one out in the same price range bur signal to noise is 105dB
