Not in my experience. I also own a MOTU Traveller(MKI) that I've been using for years for location work. I just used it on a quick project last weekend. It has horrible pre's on it. It doesn't matter what I use for mics - even my most "warm" mics. It is outrageously sterile and unnatural...
HA! Well played. Unless, of course, that woman is the principle flautist of the Minnesota Opera (and Grammy nominated!). She's is a very amazing woman - and has some great ears. I'd take her over any of my interns any day (even the one that interned with Bob Katz before me).
jarl,
I didn't mean to come across as if you had a lack of knowledge of the gear. I probably came off a little insulting! Well, in my experience, I've noticed that even with my Millennia's it can sound sterile (clinical), but it really depends on the room. The same goes with running the...
That would be ideal, but wouldn't work for the 5.1 set up. Though I could purchase another Sub7 to do it and mute the sub on the 5.1 "setting."
Nice! Since the sub has two ins, I might be able to use the other channel to reroute the stereo mix. Or, as you said, maybe I could just route...
+1 on this.
I forgot to mention: with the UFX, you get TotalMix which is a great piece of monitor management software and so much more. I also used Logic for years (which I spent $500 on), but now I use Reaper (which is 1/2 the cost or $60 or free if you are still developing integrity). I do...
Jarl,
I've got the exact same equipment. I have 4 CMC62s, 2 CMC64s and 2 CMC64xts. I really like the pres on the UFX. Are they the best in the world? No, but they contend very well against the topshelf names - and way outperform any budget gear. The closest I can compare them to is the FMR...
Thanks for the good advice! You now have pics of me and one of my genetically perfect offsprings (minus the red hair) as my avatar. As a father who makes 100% of my money from music to support his family, I've never thought that HR would be a place to solicit business - just as a way to...
I don't like bragging or name dropping. It seems like on HR, you have to do that to get any credibility as an engineer.
The point of the experience I wrote about was that you have to be in direct contact throughout the album process so there won't come up with problems like phasing. This...
Thanks for posting that article. It's a great reminder.
For those who do live recording and understand how to used mic bleed to an advantage, this is especially important.
For example, one live album I engineered was mixed by someone else. He complained to the musicians that there was phase...
I need some monitor management help.
I have five Adam A7's and a Adam Sub7. I use the TotalMix software which was included with my UFX for monitor management. It's a great piece of gear and software. The UFX has 8 outs. Outs 1-6 are used for the 5.1. I have 7 and 8 open.
This is where the...
Thanks! That was a good read. Maybe I shouldn't bash Peavey anymore! I wonder how much of tube design in amps correlates to mics? If it does, than that really explains what's happening with the transformers (along with his comparison of hi-fi vs. guitar).
This was a little inaccurate by that article. The cheaper transformers lose low end - but this might only be in regard to changing impedance though.
Too many variables to contend with right now. Brain shutting down.
I just found an article about high quality transformers and it stated this:
"Of course, nothing absolutely eliminates RFI. However, the right transformer can be a simple and elegant way to purify the desired signal. They do a terrific job of isolating the sound from the hostile world outside so...
Is this like the distortion like the 2nd or 3rd order harmonic distortion in tubes? Or is it because tube amps use transformers that causes this distortion?
Interesting that you thought of that. I've always liked the sound of "fuller" or warmer mics with transformers. But the transformer in the u-67 and the ST51 are completely different. If I remember right (without going into the studio and opening it) the ST51 has a much smaller transformer...
