what is this all about !?!?

I think their transition to digital occured only a few years ago at most. I picked up a few machines from them sometime back and they still had a couple more in their dupe area for dumping old tapes from their library to CD. All their stuff was OTARI

what is this all about !?!?

I'd venture that this was a dupe sutup for commercial use....distribution to radio stations perhaps. Commercials, PSA's, serial radio programs. I saw a setup like this locally that a religious radio network used for content distribution

    Reel to reel rack/cabinet - what's a good design?

Ok, so I have pics and a dimensions on the rack I have. As you can see it is currently holding up an M-308, but it can accommodate a reel machine upto 24" tall or other rack gear.

    Reel to reel rack/cabinet - what's a good design?

dethride...I'll post some pics and dimensions tomorrow. If I were to build this I would add some rack space below on the flat front as well as an overhead bridge. One nice this I did not mention is that although there are no rack rails, the dimensions are such that rack gear will just drop in...

    Reel to reel rack/cabinet - what's a good design?

I did not see the EBAY listing for rack the rack that Beck shows, but I recognize the pictures. I actually bought that exact rack off of local Craigslist in Arlington Texas when he probably could not sell it on EBAY. I tried a reel to reel and some various rack gear in there before it ended up...

    Lateset tape + tape scam

At least with C-list or any purchase you can drive to there is at worst a visual once over before you hand over your cash, and at best a chance to plug it, run it, record to it, etc. . I have walked on local deals when I found the not-so-hidden flaw. On the other hand one Clist seller GAVE me...

    Lateset tape + tape scam

I just go into most deals with the understanding that, if they says its untested, that means it does not work. Period. None of that " i dont have a powercord" or "the guy who I got it from says it works" BS. If it does not explicitly says it works, I go on the side of "it doesnt".

    388 No power

First off, if the unit is in nice condition other than the no power issue, is complete (no missing parts) and a visual on the heads and etc says its not total toast, its worth the parts at $100. Meeting the above criteria, I'd low ball him and take it home. Fuses: under the top cover (above...

What does it take to add a head....

Cory, unless the gap size makes a difference for the playback electronics, thats not a problem. I am not trying to be compatable with anything except the 4 track tapes recorded on other machines. Is coil resistance the key factor? If so this is simple enuff to check. I have a "spare" 440 that i...

What does it take to add a head....

I would like to have a quarter track play head on my half track Ampex 440C. Ampex did offer the half track head stack with an optional quarter track play head and a built in switch to flip between half track and quarter track, but I have been unsuccessful in finding one at a reasonable price...

    Reel-to-Reel Issue

Most likely causes are a warped take up reel ( easy fix...get a different reel) or the turntable ( the thing the reel is mounted to) is bent. Do this. In PLAY, does the spindle on the takeup reel (the post in the middle) wobble or does it stay straight? Wobble means bent table or spindle. Not...

    388 Tension adjustment....Mr.Beats.....

On the tape counter, the tach roller can get sticky on the shaft with old lube. Remove the tach roller, clean the shaft and inside of the roller bore very well, lube the shaft with a drop if turbine or light oil, and reassemble. If I recall, there is a small washer on the top of the roller that...

Why does a glazed or hardened pinch roller cause trouble??

Todd...I have an X20R with the same problem apparently you are having. The tape will ride up on the infeed capstan pinch roller. I too tried inverting it (no difference) but did not try swapping rollers. Irritating

Why does a glazed or hardened pinch roller cause trouble??

Cory, I did not say the pinch roller drives the tape. I said it provides friction and grip to move the tape. Constant friction is what makes the tape move at a constant speed. Yes, there are machines that do not have pinch rollers. That is not relevant, since the MM1000 in question does, and...

Why does a glazed or hardened pinch roller cause trouble??

Cory, your analogy about front wheel drive/ bald back tires is all wrong. If the capstan is doing all the work here, then why do you need a pinch roller at all? Cause the pinch roller is where the friction is, NOT the capstan. One of the two surfaces that contact the tape needs to have grip to...
