    On My Mind-Bluegrass Content

A little sloppy in many ways, but still I'm okay with it, I think. On My Mind

    Bluegrass tunes

Just listened to this in the room. Yesterday was over headphones. Changes things quite a bit. Yeah, use a little reverb (like salt, you know, to taste) You could leave the levels as is and be fine. Maybe get away from it for a while, and if it makes you happy, it's good. I like it. I'd sit...

    Bluegrass tunes

Nice live feel. If you can bring up the level of the harmonica and mandolin fills closer to the level of the guitar solo, it would work better for me. The bass is at a minimum level in my opinion...it works, but I could use a little more bass unless it muddies things up for some reason.

Re-Make The Battle of New Orleans

I enjoyed your approach to the song. It is pointless to compare it to Johnny Horton's version. If you can search youtube for Jimmy Driftwood performing it, you'll be in for a treat. The lyrics had to be tamed quite a bit to make it radio friendly for 1959.

A little bluegrass pickin' over at a friend's house last night.

Ii used an sm57 pointed at the f hole on this but a SDC would have been better. If your bass player moves around wrap the mic in a towel and stuff it under the tailpiece pointed up toward the bridge. If you want a more detailed sound try a second mic pointed where the neck meets the body.

A little bluegrass pickin' over at a friend's house last night.

I am not Bill, but that sure made my day.:D Distance from the mic to the banjo was less than 12", but I did not pay close attention. It was pointed toward the middle of the head and under where my hand rests. There is a mix of the RE15 and banjo bleed on the 57 that was my vocal mic.

A little bluegrass pickin' over at a friend's house last night.

I remixed Dig a Hole in the Meadow to hopefully soften the banjo a bit and bring up the bass.

Thanks guys. I am going to work on both a little...especially Dig a Hole. Much obliged.

A little bluegrass pickin' over at a friend's house last night.

These were recorded on a Zoom R16 with various dynamic mics: SM57s, 58s for vocals, an SM57 knockoff for guitar, and an EV RE15 on banjo. Take Me In Your Lifeboat Dig a Hole in the Meadow This is a quick headphone mix, but I need to go back in and work on the balance and levels. Still, I am...

Edirol R-09hr vs Zoom H4n vs Zoom H2

I have the H2. I doubt you are going to hear a difference in the sound of the built in mics from one Zoom recorder to the next. I don't know about the Edirol. I chose the H2 for different reasons...features. It is small, convenient and inexpensive. It has four mics, and you get some...

    Amos Moses (re-visited)

It's a great cover. I'm glad to hear somebody studying and doing Jerry Reed's music. Thanks for that. I enjoyed it. By the way, I couldn't tell the laughing between lines wasn't Jerry.

Eight More Miles to Louisville - Mick (Grandpa) Jones

Doug, I've been a fan of your picking for a few years now via banjo hangout. I gave it a listen on a small phone speaker and with decent headphones. The mix translates well in either case...so great job. There is nothing sticking out like a sore thumb...everything sits in it's space nicely...

How I spent yesterday (4/24/11) WARNING - Bluegrass content !!!

I'm envious. I wish I'd had a pickin' on Easter. Everybody looked like they were having a great time, and I heard some good notes...especially the guitar solo. Was that Ragtime Annie?

Old fiddle tune (no fiddle) banjo and mandolin

Thanks. I'm inclined to that way of thinking for sure. I'm going to try before going on to recut, but you may be right. For some reason, I think I can cut and paste by musical phrase and be okay. I'm recording and mixing on an Akai DPS24, and that thing has a way of smoothing edits for you...

Old fiddle tune (no fiddle) banjo and mandolin

I wish I could play fiddle, 'cause this needs one ;) Soppin' The Gravy It is a work in progress, but there is one problem I feel like is preventing me from progressing with this mix any further. There are parts of the mando that are a little out of the pocket groove wise and too loud. I know...

    Old Style Bluegrass

I know what you mean about the extra measures. It lets the music breathe a little . Unfortunately we are talking about major surgery to add that into the song. I should have taken it into account. On the other hand I just might ask a good upright bass player to come and replace my minimalistic...
