Good gear to start with (Pro Tools)?

And there is a difference in the treatment you may need for tracking instruments and what you may need for mixing in a controlled environment. When you don't have $, sofas, bookshelves, leftover insulation from construction projects, throwaway cubicle walls, or moving blankets can work for you...

    EQ on a bluegrass song

I didn't have much time after my first listen to respond, but I also wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the playing and singing on that recording. It was also well recorded and mixed. Now, about the mandolin, it is not too harsh...but like you said, played over a certain trebly sounding...

    EQ on a bluegrass song

Sounds really good on my droidx speaker and on headphones . Mandolin is the only thing that the highs may sound a little harsh under the circumstances you described. What mic did you record it with? An inexpensive ribbon mic is a great thing to have around.

    Bluegrass Instrumental

I'll drink to that! Well, if I had to give up either Lefty or my banjo, it would have to be banjo! That was a very nice thing to say, though. Thanks, Jimtl! Another vote for bass. Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet. Thank you.

    Bluegrass Instrumental

If you were fantasizing about taking a hoe down, I could see how banjo music might either spoil or enhance the moment...you know, depending upon your personality. Thanks for suffering through a bit of the tune, FoulPhil. Thanks for this and the other very nice comments, Antonfan. Yeah, I...

    Bluegrass Instrumental

Busted! When I get enough nerve, I'll throw on some bass. Thanks a bunch for the input.

    Midiman audio buddy

If this is the same as an M-Audio Audio Buddy (isn't midiman an earlier version of m-audio?), I'd say $85 at Kraft Music is too high. I throw one in a bag when I go to gigs in case the mixer is short a couple of preamps. If you just need a phantom power unit, I would not get something with a...

New Studio, New Song, First Attempt at Upright Bass

Just get my very best bass sound yet by following this advice with an Oktava mk012 instead of the 58. Tried the 58, too, and it worked, but the 012 gave me a better thump in the mix.

    SM57 owners--is mine defective?

If your new one is defective, both my old ones are defective...one Unidyne III made in USA and the other in Mexico. Both capsule covers spin freely and both have concave mesh covers...unless you are looking at it from the capsule's point of view, of course.

New Studio, New Song, First Attempt at Upright Bass

Somehow I missed the first post and listened straight away to this one. It sounds great to me. Everything I record is pretty straight forward...you know what it sounds like in the room. Except maybe some 'verb. Seems to me you did a great job with fx on this singer. It's a cool sound.

    A cute little original tune

Thanks, guys. I was mighty proud of Gavin for writing and performing that one. I'll have to twist his arm to get him in here with a bass fiddle.

Original Song "Blink" recorded on Zoom R8

Those Zoom units are great for what they can do. As far as the song, it almost made me cry thinking about my son who is three and growing fast. Where did that round headed little baby with two teeth go? God bless you for being able to put those very powerful emotions into words.

    A cute little original tune

Hey, a big thanks to all you guys. I hear what y'all are talking about on the vocal. Everything but the second guitar mic was cut through a Millennia HV3. Great for stringed instruments, maybe not so much for vocals. I can usually get a good capture, but I'm still quite a novice at mixing. I...
