    EV RE-15 stories

Congratulations to your bandmate. I bought two of these beauties from a guy on Ebay who had several for sale. I paid $135 each for them, which is more than I ought to have. Since then, I've seen an RE15 and 16 used at Sam Ash for $150 each...and the mics looked like they had been fished from...

    dark hollow

Also a little bit Ry Cooderish. I love that song, and I love done this way. Nice groove and cool guitar fills...fits the vocals. Great job.

    Wouldn't be caught without...

The reason there isn't much buzz about them these days is 1.The honeymoon is over and everyone is on to the next cheap sexy mic that sounds better than it ought to. 2.There was a period when you could get them really dirt cheap, but not any more. They are still a good value, but not pocket...

AKG C 414 Shootout and Comparison

I found this quite interesting and look forward to listening on a better sound system. I love me some 414s.

RME Fireface 800 or Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56

I've read negative comments on the ff800 ' s preamps on another forum, but I liked them. I moved away from a computer based system. But The fireface never let me down. I bought it on Ebay for $800 and sold it on craigslist for $900.

    New Favorite Banjo Mic

Ever watch Hee Haw? I've never seen an episode without a banjo with an RE20 in front of it. Sometimes I believe they used a U87, but I'd like to have the RE20 that Bobby Thompson poured all those good notes into...or any RE20 for that matter.

    Wouldn't be caught without...

If I'm going to book a studio, I would not fool with one that doesn't have some microphones, but I understand the spirit of the question. For acoustic music, which is about all I record, and I am a musician first and foremost before and engineer: a couple of AKG 414's for some vocals and room...

    New Favorite Banjo Mic

    New Favorite Banjo Mic

Oktava MK-319 Going Where John Henry Fell Dead I know they have been around for a while, and I've really enjoyed my MK012s on lots of stuff, but I just got this mic in trade, and I like it.

    Some banjo-like guitar picking

I have seen them called both, but Sonny Osborne used to record with what he called in the liner notes a guit-jo, and as far as I know it was the guitar with a 5-string banjo neck. I'd like to have something like that in a cutaway with nylon strings and electronics.

    Some banjo-like guitar picking

I don't know why, but I really don't like those things. Isn't that awful of me? Sorry about that to any of you guys that use one. I don't mean to be closed minded or anything...I just am.

    Some banjo-like guitar picking

Hey, thanks for the nice words about my playing. Vocals a bit boxy: agreed. The sounds I get with the DM20 have a "pre-processed" feel to me. It's not just a mic I can point and not think about. It probably was not the best choice. In fact, one MK012 halfway between the mouth and guitar...

    Some banjo-like guitar picking

You CAN make a guitar with a banjo style neck, but I was thinking more in terms of right and left hand tecnique.

    Some banjo-like guitar picking

John Henry I was just experimenting with tuning the guitar to an open D and more or less playing Scruggs style banjo techniques. I pointed an Oktava 012 at the guitar and sang into an Advanced Audio DM20

    EQ on a bluegrass song

I "self limit", too...meaning I holler into the mic and turn the gain down on the preamp until it stops clipping. I really enjoyed the bluesy straight ahead banjo playing, and I hope I can hear more...but sooner than a few years!

Building Bass Traps with Home Depot supplies!

Very handy link: http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm Spend some time looking around the internet for using fluffy fiberglass as bass trapping (filling corners with 16" or so of it, or just stacking rolls in the corners). The common thing to do is 4 inches thick of rigid...
