I bought one of these Chord mics a few months back to see how good they are - at around £12 each in the UK they are a cheap alternative to an SM57. I must say I was pretty impressed - it is difficult to tell it apart from my 60's Unidyne III, which is a bit fragile and kept for special...
Hi Level Anything. Did the UK place I mentioned manage to supply the roller? I noticed just now they are out of stock at the moment - maybe there has been a run on them!
Is this the one you meant Dave?
BBC - Arena: American Epic - Media Centre
It looks fascinating - I'll try to catch it on watch again.
PS - managed to watch it - incredible! Great little details, like having a bellows system to remove the cuttings, and did they say the first electric amplifier?
Saw the TV programme - just found the radio programmes, thanks for pointing them out! Haven't heard all of the radio stuff yet but still haven't found much of an description of how they mixed in the pre-bounce tapes. I bought the CD last week and am amazed at how good it sounds - just wish they...
Thanks Level Anything, that's exactly what I was saying! It is interesting that the quoted freq response of the Studer isn't that great -especially at 7.5 ips, and the 244 matches it at 15. Just for the hell of it I just recorded the remixed version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" on 2...
Hi Level Anything,
I now buy pinch rollers for my 244s from a company in the UK called CPC. Here is the link: Not sure if they export to the USA nut maybe worth a try. AV1722 is the size to look for in searches.
UNBRANDED - AV1722 - Replacement Plastic Tape Drive Pinch Roller | CPC UK
They...
Glad you find this interesting Level Anything. I wonder why they haven't done this with "Revolver" too, as I'm pretty sure they were bouncing a lot for this.
Looking at the Studer J37 specs, it is amazing how good the humble 244 is by comparison (especially when running on type 1!)
Thanks for all the replies - I see how it was done now!
I'm still surprised at how noise-free the new mix is. I suppose there is less noise from the bounces. Looking at the spec of the Studer J37 is doesn't seem that great to me...
Thanks for the replies - how does vari-speed work? Can it cope with all the variations in tape speed between the machines - surely it has to be absolutely perfect?
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this but I'm confused about how the remix was done on this. It appears that Giles Martin had access to all the original tapes. 4 track machines (Studers?) were used for the original recording and tracks were regularly bounced down from one machine to...
Thanks again for the circuits Dave. I'm back home now and able to have a proper look. I couldn't resolve the detail on the hybrid circuit before but now it is really clear.
Thanks again - I am in the UK - have just sent you a personal message!
The mic does sound amazing with the direct connection - lively with plenty of top and bottom!
Thanks again. I don't have a de-coupling capacitor at the chip input - I thought I could get away without it because I'm using a dual rail supply (two batteries). I'm a bit wary of the loss of bass response, but I guess 47mfd allow for good bass? I guess I went for the non inverting design...
Thanks again Dave for all this. It is so helpful! I think I will just leave well alone! One thing which is bugging me is that I am using almost zero ohms at the input to the op amp. I originally put a 50k resistor in the feedback loop to the inverting input and a 1k trimmer at the input but...
Thanks for this Dave. What effect does the input transformer have?
Asking a possibly silly question, I'm wondering whether to build another amp with a balanced input. At the moment I'm using the mics unbalanced, with the "cold" lead wired to the earth on the jack. I realise you lose the...
I've not used these machines but I've heard you can achieve pretty good results from 8 tracks on cassette. You could write a paper about the effect of track width, but in a nutshell, my understanding is that if you halve the track width you cut the S/N ratio by 3dB. There shouldn't be any effect...
I think I've finally found a partial solution to this - not a battery powered USB interface but a cheap battery powered pre-amp to improve the inputs of the Tascam digital recorders when using dynamic mics. I've been playing around with an old NE5332 op amp I had in the drawer and with just a...
