    TEAC/Tascam 244 - Strange Behaviour/Recording Problems

That track does sound really strange - not like anything I've experienced with faulty dbx decode or faulty heads. Looks like you've got a problem with the recording and playback circuits though, which makes things a bit difficult. Let's hope some of the bigger brains here can help and that you...

    TEAC/Tascam 244 - Strange Behaviour/Recording Problems

I've marked in red where I remember my fuses were - I may not be able to get to the machine for 2 weeks to check for sure - but this does seem to be a different design. I hope someone with the Japanese - or even USA version can help here. It would be strange if it didn't have them. Mine blow...

    TEAC/Tascam 244 - Strange Behaviour/Recording Problems

I seem to remember the fuses being on a vertical panel nearest to you on the bottom left hand side as you view the 244 from the back upside down - the length of the machine down from the transformer. They are facing the plastic outer case. Sorry I can't take a pic to make things clearer but...

Still worth checking the fuses. Maybe the clicking is from a faulty relay?

    TEAC/Tascam 244 - Strange Behaviour/Recording Problems

Sorry - I'm away from home at the moment and don't have the schematics to photograph - I just found these by luck on my pc at my current location. I'll keep looking to see if I have any more.

    TEAC/Tascam 244 - Strange Behaviour/Recording Problems

I can't remember how the fuses are labelled I'm afraid and I don't have my machine here at the moment to check. The panel is quite easy to see in my machine - they fuses all sit vertically. Maybe someone else with a 244 can take a look? Meanwhile, I have these sections of the schematic to hand...

    TEAC/Tascam 244 - Strange Behaviour/Recording Problems

Not sure I can be of any help but I thought I'd pitch in as nobody else has yet. I haven't got the circuits to hand but I'm wondering if it could simply be a fuse or two that have blown? I only say this because I had a couple of fuses blow and lost playback from all the channels. Maybe you have...

Solved Tascam 244 Pan control only panning left, is there a service manual available?

Thanks! Tascam Ninja describe the mono channel faders (which are the 2 I need) for the 144 as "Single slider 10k Log body length 90 mm" and the text suggest they are the same for the 244. I will try to measure up and also get the width next week when I get home. The stereo mixer fader has a...

Solved Tascam 244 Pan control only panning left, is there a service manual available?

Thanks - I think it will be tricky enough getting to the channel faders.... I think I saw a post here somewhere with instructions how to take the faders apart to clean them?

Solved Tascam 244 Pan control only panning left, is there a service manual available?

Well done fixing it! I have a couple of failed faders on my ancient 244's input channels which I should replace. How did you get to the master fader? Did you need to take off the top or could you get to it from the back? Any chance you could give a pointer as to where to buy replacements? I...

Tascam 244 for mixing digital recordings

I guess this effect has been discussed before but I thought I'd mention it. Over the course of the last few months I've been recording a song in collaboration with a friend who lives in Australia (I'm in the UK). The song has great sentimental value as it was written by my late brother over 40...

    Tascam 244 compared to reel

Thanks for this Reel Person. It is just that the 244 sounds so stunning in good hands - as Famous Beagle has demonstrated here so brilliantly.I still wonder if anyone has done a blind test comparing recordings on a 244 to 4 tracks on reel - and maybe 4 tracks recorded on a Tascam 16 on 1 inch...

    Tascam 244 compared to reel

It is indeed gold for me too John! It is fantastic to hear what these machines are still capable of - I hope the thread can keep going for a while with folk's thoughts and maybe more examples.

    Tascam 244 compared to reel

Yes I agree about the maintenance! I stopped using C60s though quite early on because I was getting more dropouts - maybe it was a problem with the TDK SAX I was using at the time. I know I keep going on about it but type I in these machines after re-bias sounds terrific and seems to give far...

    Tascam 244 compared to reel

Thanks for the track Famous Beagle. It sounds terrific. But you only get the true beauty of the sound in its original analogue state I think. It still blows me away when I play recordings back I made 36 years ago.

    Tascam 244 compared to reel

Thanks for this, it all makes such great sense. It is just that there is no noise from the 244 with type 1. Zero, zilch. Headroom with dbx is phenomenal and the freq response goes way past 19kHz. I don't think I would be able to tell the difference with a studio machine. Maybe my ears are the...

    Tascam 244 compared to reel

I guess this has may have been covered before but I couldn't find anything when I searched. It may be another rambling post but here goes..... I spent a few days last week fooling around with old 244 machines. Again I'm amazed at the quality of the recordings - especially on the machine I...

Mics used in home studios in the mid/late 70’s?

My late brother cut a few LPs in the early 70's using a Tandberg 3000x and Unidyne III and later in in stereo using two 3000xs and Unidynes and tranferring the backing track(s) from one recorder to the other together with the live recording. I've lately been remastering some of the recordings...

    Tascam 244 2nd Channel Playback

Hi Freddyk - glad you managed to fix it. I sent a comment on your previous thread about those jumpers and how you could feed signals to C3 and C4 here if you ever want to record all 4 tracks at once. It is a good idea to use some switch cleaner on the sockets now and again.

Tascam 244 3rd and 4th Channel Not Working

Just had a thought - if you do want to record all 4 tracks at once you may find you can feed the input to C3 and C4 via the direct channel inputs at the back after taking out the jumpers, using an external mixer to boost mic levels. It could even be that the C3 and C4 jumpers are missing or...
