Don't overlook the acoutics of your recording and mixing environment, it's makes a big difference.

If I turn up too loud it really kills the recording because there is too much sound pressure in my small room. Of course the amp sounds better when it's louder so it's a bit of a trade off.

If you've got a guitar that tunes and plays ok, I'd say amp as well.

Even low watt amps go pretty loud. I've got an old Gibson Skylark that's probably around 30 watts. The treble is still peircing full volume in a smallish room. There are some places on the net that sell 1 or 2 watt (etc...) tubes to put in the power amp to lower the volume. Don't know if...
