i think the s/pdif would only do you stereo (2 channels)... i think you need the pci card as well but i have never done this. i was interested in doing this at one time but i have a shuttle xpc which only has one pci slot (price you pay for having a small little unit).

I've looked at a bunch of rackmount 4 channel headphone amps and there are plenty that would work great for me: 4 channels 2 stereo main inputs some drive two or three headphones per channel (nice) some have EQ on each channel (nice) some have a mix knob for the main input and aux insert signal...

does sytek have a 2 channel pre-amp of similar quality for maybe less $$? i want a nicer preamp than my aardvark q10 but dont need 4 of em. thanks

aardvark q10.... pci host card... to a breakout box with 8 pres... 4 with phantom power... its what i have. the company just went out of business or something like that so theres no support but the units are going for pretty cheap now on ebay.

my hi hats are already almost too loud without them being miced lol as for the ride--no... i used to just do the four mic setup but now ive got more inputs and more mics so im doing the toms as well.

maybe you could try and isolate the kick drum a bit? put a blanket over it or something? i doubt thatd help that much though... or maybe you could have the drummer not actually play the kick drum... and then dub in the kick drum later lol.... i wonder if that would work very well...

I'm not sure if you could go wrong with either of those setups... (wish i could have those mics haha). I have a D-112 and am very happy with it on kick, I've heard great things about the Beyer m201 on snare, as well as MD-421s on toms/snare/guitar/etc... I've really heard good things about all...
