    they told me my mic cant go into my computer

    kdoggity, That's true the preamp on the soundcard will not give you enough amplification to get a decent sound, that's what crazydoc was saying, to SuperVic. You have observed this first hand. Just so there's no confusion the dynamic mics will not use the phantom power whatsoever, you'll get...

    Problem with one of my ECM 8000s

    Update, I tried turning off phantom power for a few minutes and turning it back on. the mic works for a few minutes and then it stops working. could it be an issue with cooling and warming components inside the mic? anyone have any experience? Maybe I need to do the ECM mod:) :) larry

    they told me my mic cant go into my computer

    I know, but if you want to learn more about mics and the different applications when to use different ones it is a great thread to read. Although it was more directed at kdoggity for his misunderstanding of the SM57. larry

    they told me my mic cant go into my computer

    kdoggity, SM57s don't require phantom power it is a dynamic mic. Condenser mics require an actual external power source (phantom power) What you probably heard was the enormously higher quality preamp and gain associated with anything other than a computer sound card. larry

    Problem with one of my ECM 8000s

    I am using my ECMs as Drum Overhead mics. I have them running as a pair wiuth the same gain on each one. I noticed on my Aardvark Control Panel and on my recorded wav forms that the left one is significantly less (10% of the other). I unhooked it and tried it direct to another channel...

    Portable Recorder -> Computer Purchase

    dwillis, It doesn't have to be "extremely portable" i.e. I will have power anywhere I do interviews. Mainly in churches and peoples houses I was looking at the vf80 or the vf160. Or some of the zoom and boss recorders. larry

    Voiceover recording on my PC - EMU 1820

    Hi Rich, Welcome to the board. Here are a few thoughts. Although I'm no expert at it. A large diaphram condenser mic. There are plenty you can get less than $200 that will do just fine. I currently use an MXL and a NADY which serve my purposes just fine. (Both less than $100) Although if...

    Having a few problems with my new setup (XP2500 Nvidia2)

    John, Sounds like you need to lower your buffers. What the delay is, is the time it take the audio to "preload" The higher the buffer setting the more audio is preloaded into ram, thus your delay. Just search in cool edit help to find where to lower your buffer setting. Larry

    Newbie here, tell me all about the VF80?

    Yea I'm looking at the vf80 also. I currently have a MR8 and purchased a preamp for my condenser mics. Shoula got a vf80 in the first place. I will probably sell my mr8 soon. larry

    Portable Recorder -> Computer Purchase

    Was not sure what forum to put this in, but here goes. I currently have a Fostex MR-8 but it only comes with 128M flash card. I need a portable recorder to take on the road for interviews, and is not limited by memory (i.e. needs at least a 20Gig HD, VF80 for example) 2 track with phantom...

    Get a regular mic with an on/off switch, and use a xlr-1/4 cable then a 1/4"-1/8" adapter. larry let me know if that makes sense

    Mic on/off switch. Ideas?

    Why not build a box with a switch in it. Have two plugs, one on each side and plug the mic on one side and plug the other to the input. Solder the switch in series with the hot lead (of the mic) Plug it up and voila'. This is what I'm planning on building for mine. larry

    So, the MR8 is worth $300?

    Well here's my .02$. I have an MR8 and by the time I get a 512M card for it I would've spent $450 total. I could've got a VF80 for $499, with a ton more features/tracks/recording time. Which I am probably going to do. Sell my MR8 and buy a VF80. larry

    Plexiglass-absortion coefficient

    87PRS Rick is correct, I researched extensively and sought the advice here (about the plexiglass/glass issue.) I ended up using laminated glass (1/4" sheets - two 1/8 sheets laminated together) I put in two 1/4" sheets with an air gap (3"). And made sure I caulked very liberally to get a...
