Yes, my bad. I didn't notice that the little buddy was just a pre-amp. I thought it was an interface. ^This is correct. Get a decent USB or firewire interface. Should help a lot.

A New Instrumental Rock Song for Review

Sounds great. Kick could come up just a bit. Ride too (I think I hear a ride, barely). Nicely played. I can hear this in a movie. A scene with some bad-ass dudes cruisin' down the highway on their Harleys, fixin' to do something evil.

By the way, I was saying don't forget the pop filter only because you would be close micing the vocals, not because I thought your vocals were overly sibilant. I'd take the shirt off. It must be the room you're recording in. Like I said a few posts ago, some bass traps and broadband...

How close are you to the mic? It sounds like you're 4 feet away. For lead vocals, close mic at a foot or less. Don't forget the pop filter.

Did you re-record the vocals? They still sound distant. Listen carefully. The vocals are BEHIND the guitars. You want them IN FRONT of the guitars and other instrumentation (unless they are back up vocals).

    EQ on a bluegrass song

Yep, I record mando with a ribbon as well. The high end roll off helps with the harshness. I still find myself cutting more highs though.

Still Learning - Eschewing Compression: "If You Don't Love Me"

No it's not the same. Ducking is when audio in one track triggers a decrease in the volume in another track/tracks. Used a lot in radio, so when the talking starts the music gets quieter, etc. I'm just talking about automation of the volume on the track itself. As the track plays, the fader...

    EQ on a bluegrass song

Instead of rolling off the whole mix, just roll off the high end on each individual instrument. Guitars don't have much useful above 7k. Mandolin around 10k. Bass, maybe 5k, and that's just the finger/slap noise. Drums need the high end for the cymbals. Vocals need the high end. If you...

Still Learning - Eschewing Compression: "If You Don't Love Me"

This sounds great. I don't hear any compression artifacts at all. Still, it's smooth enough. Nice job on the harmony vocals. Compressors are evil. I've become a big user of volume automation instead. Compressor if needed to just pick up the small spikes left over.

    Another New Song, "Downhill"

I like the guitars, and that part of the mix sounds pretty good to me. I can hear the kick, but it sounds like it's all beater, kind of high and clicky. Doesn't seem to have much thump to it. Same with the snare. It's buried in the mix and doesn't have much thwack. Get a good thump in the...

New track called "RIDING" just was looking for some feedback.

This is not a genre of music I would listen to, but the mix sounds pretty good to me. Things are spread out, it's balanced and levels are adjusted well so that you can hear everything. Nothing seems too loud to me. As far as thickening vocals, I use a few different plugs. First would be a...

    Simple Acoustic Song

Thanks for the nice comments. Were you listening to the mix I put up in post #22, or one of the mixes in the original post? Just curious if you think the guitars in the post 22 mix are still boomy?

My son lives in Texas, and he's been griping about the 105 temp every day. Sounds awful. About re-recording the vocals, why go into a closet? I'd recommend against that, unless you want them to sound boxy. Why not just record them in the same room as everything else? Probably sound better...

She played the guitar too. Did a pretty good job. Thanks, I agree. Nice to know I'm not the only one.

Yep, I find myself cutting around 200 quite a bit, and in fact this mix has quite big cut there.

Short little song about driving cross country

This sounds way better. Not sure you're there yet, but it's a step in the right direction. It went from an amateurish home recording to a slice of Americana. Sounds more real to me, like a bunch of good ol' boys got together and laid down an honest attempt at making music. Keep working on...

I'm listening now. The premise of the song is good. It has lot's of potential. Tele solo near the beginning is too loud. I'd turn that down a little. The vocals aren't super essy. They sound distant though. If you want the vocals up front, you need to be closer to the mic. Helps to have...
