Long Way from Home-Blues mix in progress

I like vocals clear and up front, especially on a song like this. I used to mix all the instruments and then add the vocal and try to get it to sit right. Lately, after watching Kenny Gioia's video series on mixing rock, I mix vocals early along with kick and snare, and get them sounding...

Need some more sets of ears!

First, really great emotional delivery on the vocals both male and female. Probably more reverb than I'd like to hear on this, but it doesn't necessarily sound bad. Where it hurts is when the synth instrument comes in. The vocals seem to move to the back and the synth is up front and...

Acoustic Idea :D wow no way!

This has a really cool sound. I like it. The vocal reverb could be a little darker, especially in the intro. The esses and tees are really bright in the reverb tail. Cut everything from around 5k up from the reverb feed and that would help (I think). There seems to be a drum timing issue in...

Long Way from Home-Blues mix in progress

It's late at night, so I can only listen on headphones, but I like this a lot. The playing excellent. The timing is spot on. I like the song a lot as well. The vocals are clear and up front. There seems to be good spread of the instruments. Not too boomy or bright. Reverb is a matter of...

I think I'm getting better at this...how's this mix?

Dave, That all makes sense. Greg's approach certainly has merit. Side note regarding flex time. Before turning it on, if you group the R and L overhead tracks(or guitar tracks, or whatever), and check the right boxes for the group, making any change in the R overhead track will...

I think I'm getting better at this...how's this mix?

There's still some problems with the overheads that you can especially hear on the crash. It sounds like the release time is too short and the compressor is clamping down hard on the crashes, then releasing before the cymbal wash is completed and the volume spikes again. It's especially...

I think I'm getting better at this...how's this mix?

Dave, I've heard Karumba's stuff, and he does a nice job, but I hope you're aware that compression is something that can't be undone no matter how good the M.E. is. Once you send an over compressed pumping mix to him, there is not much he'll be able to do to fix it. GZ

I'm not dead! Vomit Hat Steve's back with a new song!

I just went back and listened again. I think it may just be a synth patch that sounds like clipped amp. Comes in at 0:05 both channels.

I'm not dead! Vomit Hat Steve's back with a new song!

Steve, It's just wacky enough to be a theme song. I hear clipping in a couple of places, but that may have been intentional ridiculous grunge. If so, never mind that comment. To me it would sound a lot better with a better bass sound. Don't know if it's a keyboard patch or what, but it...

I think I'm getting better at this...how's this mix?

Dave, Love the song, the arrangement is cool. I do hear the pumping and the high end break up during the cymbal crashes. I wonder, does your two bus compressor have a side chain filter for the low end. If not, the low end triggers the compressor more than you'd like, and compresses...

    New toon from The Jongleurs

I haven't read any other posts, so if I'm repeating anything forgive me. Instrumentally this sounds really good. Love the acoustic guitars, loved the wah guitar. The drums sound good to my non drummer ears. The vocals seem a bit off for this song. I think they're just dryer sounding than...

Excellent Post. Thank you. You have just articulated what has been my suspicion. I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Thanks. You may be right. I have a ton of Alison Krause, but I never made the connection. Maybe I'll just send her a mix without the strummed guitar. I like the way you worded this. Where is she headed with this song? You guys are awesome.

Need Your help on this one.

Thanks for all the replies. Greg, your response is probably the most accurate and succinct. Heatmeister, I sent her a rough mix after we added all of the elements, and she said she "looooooooved it". That's when I started spending hours on polishing things up. That's what has me a little...

Need Your help on this one.

I've spent hours recording and working on this mix FOR FREE for a local gal, who initially said she loved it. Now she wants to cut out the fiddle, second acoustic guitar, pad, and mandolin and just leave it with her vocals and lone acoustic guitar. I actually think this mix sounds way fuller...

    Nothing Longer Than The Night

You've gotten some good feedback so far, so I'm going to focus on your vocals. Last song you posted, I thought the vocals sounded thin and timid (sorry). These sound way better. There's more low mid, and it really helps. It also sounds rounder and less edgy than before. Big improvement IMO...

    Day of Repentance - opinions?

Not bad. A couple of things stand out to me. The rhythm guitar sounds like it's about 10 feet behind the vocals. Don't know how you mic'd it or processed it, but that sounds a little distracting. There are some timing issues when the picked guitar comes in. The vocals that come in around...

    "Beautiful Ashes" - feedback wanted

My initial impressions as I'm listening now: Love the guitar tones Drums sound really good, but the crashes seem chopped off, with not much sustain. Over compressed? Done on purpose? It doesn't sound awful, just a bit un-natural to me. Vocals sit well in the mix Tight performances Nice...

    Into Your Eyes

The mix sounds big wide and spacious. The vocals sound kind of small, dry and boxy to me. The two don't fit together. I don't really care for the auto-tune, and that may be part of what's making it sound wonky to me. This is a great song, but the vocals need to be bigger IMO.
