floors & ceilings & office furniture

There is very little you can do to soundproof that type of situation other then making sure the doors and windows have a good seal.

    contemporary mixing consoles

I agree with Pipe to an extent. There is definately a noticeable difference between cheap and really cheap. A small mackie mixer will sound obviously better then a cheapo behringer or sampson. As a good rule of thumb (with a few obvious exceptions) if it costs less then $300 it's probably...

    Signal Routing

If you want to have separate submixes of the tracks already recorded then you need to run more outs from your computer into the mixer and assign whatever you want to those outputs in Cubase. Then setup your Aux channels to feed the headphone amp inputs and whatever you want on that headphone...

    Surround Mixing Problem

If you're lucky your DAW or monitoring system has a mono button. Otherwise do like Glenn suggested and pan everything straight up.

recording vocals in a room with drums

Yeah, get rid of the carpet. The windows are of no consequence. Just turn off the snare spring and you should be fine.

Doubling tracking guitars for punk rock?

I don't have time to listen to the tracks right now but sometimes doubling the tracks with a cleaner sound can really help give the guitars more definition.

    Surround Mixing Problem

When a surround decoder needs to fake surround from a stereo track it takes what is common to both speakers and puts it in the center, keeps the wide stuff to the sides and then delays the wide stuff and sticks it in the rear channel. It is pretty much the same as M/S or Mid-Side decoding...

Should I Mix Individual Tracks Into Digital Recorder?

I wouldn't go through all that trouble just to run them through a Behringer. Use plugin compressors on the individual tracks and master buss when mixing in PT.

How to handle / fix acoustics in this room (pictures included)?

I would put the mixing desk along the wall with the window and place ridgid fiberglass panels all along both ceiling walls and up in the peak.

Drum recording... first of many posts to come.

Running all the tracks through a cheap tube pre sounds like a bad idea. Also if you want a punchy, tight sound that usually requires a bit of limiting on the individual drum mics and will require having everything on separate tracks.

    Mastering Question

Are you confusing mixing with mastering? Mastering is where they process your final 2 track mixdowns.

    BIIG OLd school Vox. HOW?

The basic trick is to just record the background vocals over and over for one big chorus sound.

    Need help on compression please.

If you know what you are doing it's perfectly fine to mangle or squash the signal on the way in if you know that is what you want. Most cheap compressors can only do about 8db of compression before sounding shitty so watch the meters. Put the ratio low for easy compression or higher around...

This HAS to be a question for the great Ethan Winer....

Just fill the room with 705 then carve out a tunnel to work in.

    I'm Killing Myself Here!!!

Then try a different limiter. The Event Horizon plugin is pretty good for an edgy type of sound. http://www.stillwellaudio.com/?page_id=16

    My head hurts

It's definately helpful to understand the basics of sound and electronics. You don't have to memorize the formulas but understanding how everything works together can go a long way.
