    Reverb Dynamics

It's pretty common to automate the reverb sends or volume. I like to setup multiple reverbs and delays for fast/loud or long/quiet parts and then automate the sends to those. You might want one sound for a verse and another for a chorus, etc. I sometimes run the reverb through a limiter if I...

    The preamp mystery

Or you could have 10 mics that sound crappy on everything. :p

    Sound absorbtion panels

Wouldn't the plasterboard be pretty heavy? You might be better off making some rolling Gobos. Basically they have absorbtion on one side and sometimes diffusion on the other, they are partitions on wheels that you can just roll up against the wall when you don't need them to isolate stuff.

Looking for tips to record a live band demo

If the room sounds good I would want to use two condensors and just stereo mic the room. If the room sounds bad I would look for another room.

    The preamp mystery

    1. Depends on how much money you have. But for most people it is insane. 2. You can get lots of pretty good mics and preamps in the $300-800 range. If you go with industry standard stuff it's hard to go too wrong. 3. Depends on the deals available and what you want to do. Generally you will...

    The preamp mystery

Photography and Audio Engineering are very similiar in that there are different ways of going about capturing the image or sound. You can go for realism, which works well for some subjects, or you can go more dramatic or impressionistic which works better for other subjects. It's probably fair...

    The preamp mystery

The point isn't that engineers hear stuff that can't be measured. It's that the non-linear response of analog circuits can be hard to define in a simple list of specs or frequency response curves. When I went from a Mackie 1604 to a Soundcraft Ghost the differences in sound were dramatic even...

compresser/Gate Limiter why you need one

I'm a keyboard player and a sound engineer and I would completely disagree with your statement. Usually the stock patches are fairly close in volume but it depends on how you are playing them for the song. Once you go in and edit effects or patch parameters you can change the volume...

    blues recording secrets ???

The Black Keys record everything to tapeand use some nice vintage gear. They had a big time producer on the last album and some good engineers. Like I said in one of your other threads, you have to break down the recording process and learn what you can about every step. There is no simple...

    Recording bass with equipment limitations.

Unless you want something really different, 90% of the time you will get your best bass sound through a direct signal. I would plug directly into the Blue Tube and try that. If you are convinced you need to mic the cab then record the direct signal and the cab mic. Just remember to mute the...

how to have more dynamic recording with pro tools ??

You are really asking a HUGE question. Everything audio engineers learn is in the pursuit of better sounding recordings. The drum and the vocal sounds are probably the biggest things that most people will notice when it is really bad or really good. I would recomend starting there and...

recording with analog tape, need help ...

On cheaper preamps you usually want to stay well below clipping and ignore any tube gain bs unless you happen to like a particular sound you are getting. Especially on fast transient stuff like cymbals and drums. If you need more saturation try running the preamp out a little hotter into the...

    Video game music production

Of course they hire people. They just don't hire people like the OP who seems to have little or no experience. I would be surprised if there were more then 1000 people working on game audio/music worldwide. You'd probably have a better chance at finding a job as a Bikini Inspector.

How do I get a thicker tone?

The Demonizer has pre and post distortion EQ's. How much more eq do you need?

Programs that sync out of time drums?

I find it's usually easier to find another part of the song or another take that can work and paste it in. I try to always keep a few full takes of every part just in case some mistakes need fixing in the mix.

    Video game music production

You are not going to get hired to do any of that stuff. Find some guys making low budget games or game mods and volunteer to do music and sound effects for them. After you have built up a good body of work you probably still won't get hired to do any of that stuff but at least you can say...

    Headphone Amp/Monitor Thru Signals

I would be nervous about any of those cheap headphone amps and especially worried about any that you have to plug the mic into. The Furman stuff is pretty good for headphone amps.

    Stereo Miking with a mixer

If you are recording off of the master outputs on the mixer then you do need to pan the mics hard Left and Right for a stereo recording. For the horns I would have each player stand in front of a mic and blow in the horns. Move the players and/or mics until it sounds good.

    Sample of bad mixes

When you are paying a Mastering Engineer they usually aren't going to "send it back" unless there is something horribly wrong with the file (clipping, drop outs, etc) . They generally will take your money and make it sound as good as they can. You might find an ME willing to make mix comments...
