    Showcase your best song!

rayc: Your stuff is cool, and man is there a lot of it. Full circle is the one I'm currently liking the most. Very simple arrangement, but it does what it's supposed to, I think. I'm also liking softdance; much fuller mix in this one. The only complaint on this one is that the vocals sound...

    Showcase your best song!

Thanks again; I believe your numerous and encouraging reviews are doing a lot to draw would-be lurkers like myself into being more active members of this forum. The stringed instrument you hear in the beginning is just a close-miked violin being fingerpicked like a guitar. I can't bow worth a...

Take Me Down.. To The River

nice. I actually like the distorted-flute thing; it adds a nice weirdness. For some reason I think that part would sound better recorded backwards in the intro, so that the notes fade in instead of out. The real strings and vocal harmony are gorgeous. Very cool sound.

Need a good 140 rock tempo for drums?

I notice you're not getting a lot of replies on this. Well, not publicly, anyway. The drums are a problem to come up with for a lot of us. Have you taken a shot at any of the drum programs out there? That would give you a little more flexibility than some of the loop-based stuff. That's the...

    pedal steel construction

Thanks. The body is cedar that's been hollowed out in the wings, and the tailpiece assembly and pickup rings are bocote. I wanted to use something pretty hard and dense for the machinery since there are small parts involved. Really it should be metal; I just don't have the tools / skill for...

    please help!!!!

Is it a high-pitched thing that's always the same pitch, like somebody hammering on a piece of metal outside? I think I hear it. Is it coming from the guitar, or just in the recording? I'd first suspect it's a room or mic placement issue (you suspected feedback, which would be my first...

    Best place for samples?

Not sure what you're looking for; that's a pretty broad description. I've found some decent things from the FreeSound Project, so you might check that out. Also you might try out some of the stuff on this list. Some of the links are dead, I think, but plenty of them worked when I was thumbing...

    Showcase your best song!

I agree with geewizu2 -- Kudos to getting this done on a 424; I use the same machine, but you're getting a way tighter / cleaner sound than I usually can. Cool sound, too; I like the 70's rock vibe that I'm getting from this.

    Showcase your best song!

Thanks for listening. I'm a few steps off the beaten path, so it's always good to hear from somebody of like mind.

    Showcase your best song!

Thanks for the kind word. That line is actually "dishes," not "tissues," but the idea's the same I guess. It's about how my life tends to spiral out of control when I'm not paying attention. And gladly; see 2:47(a) or Scrapiron Peacocks

    pedal steel construction

And lpdeluxe, I understand where you're coming from, I just don't have the resources to throw at it right now. I don't even have a really good quality guitar, and that's my main instrument. Everything else I own is some kind of rigged-up nightmare, so I'm not too worried about constant-tuning...

    pedal steel construction

Nah, you're right. It's a regular guitar, not a steel, and it's a good ways from finished, too, but I'll post some pictures of where it is right now. The assembly is a tailpiece that sits a an inch or two behind a tune-o-matic style roller bridge. Each string sits in a little quote-shaped...

    pedal steel construction

Ok, so it's the fretting that causes the need for intonation adjustment. That should make my job easier. Thanks for the info. I may be doing a simpler version of what you're talking about on my current project -- I don't have stops for specific notes, but I have a little bender for each...

    Showcase your best song!

trying again Sorry to keep posting links to the same song; just never sure if anybody could see it in its usual location. See if this one works: http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/75273-dan_w-va.mp3

Yeah, that's my route. Lately I've been using a spark plug socket.

    pedal steel construction

See, _that_ looks like something I could put together. All I'd have to buy is some tuners and a pickup; I bet I could make an intonable (sp?) bridge pretty easily if I didn't have to also make the action adjustable. One more on the project list, I guess (after the two guitars-in-progress and...

    Does Audacity do this?

    pedal steel construction

Yeah, I suppose that's like everything else. If I stumble on one cheap [unlikely], I'll pick it up. Honestly, though, I already have several instruments around the house that I still suck at (violin), so I should probably concentrate on that some before I get too much into new acquisitions.

    Showcase your best song!

Well, finally this one's taking off a little; this thread was started weeks ago, as I recall. Most people post their new stuff down in the mp3 clinic a few topics down. You can hear a pretty decent cross section scrolling through there. I just haven't posted there because so many of my mixes...

    pedal steel construction

Ah, jeez. Like playing one of those one-man-band setups while also running a sewing machine. Yeah, I'll keep putting that one off. Or maybe I should start learning now, if I ever want to get decent at it before I die. And as I recall, I had the same confusion -- it was only a few years ago I...
