    Mystery Noise

What two guitars are you checking? For example, is the other one shielded or humbuckers as opposed to singles? +1 on the ceiling fan thing; any unshielded electric motor can cause weird stuff to happen. Any dimmer switches on lights are also suspects. I also second the cell-phone thing...

    Guitarrón - split heel

I see what you're saying. Like a frame that includes the heel-clamping caul on one end and wraps around the endpin area on the other, to stabilize the position of the caul and keep it from sliding down towards the neck when you put the clamping pressure on. I wonder if you could do this with a...

    intonation issue

That's a good point about getting the action right first. Wouldn't filing the metal down move the contact point farther from the neck? Or are you talking about filing down the bottom of the saddle so it'll move farther up? Either way, I'd do that as a last resort, as that's going to eat up...

    My quilted maple project

I bet either dots or small rectangles made of a contrasting wood would also look good on this one. Like maybe Bocote or Cocobolo. I also like Chili's idea, but I think I'd stain the inserts the same color as the body if I used maple, just to tie the whole thing together.

    My quilted maple project

Man, this thing is coming out beautiful. I agree the pickup ring works here; the only pickups I like just sticking out of the wood tend to be soapbar types. The tortoise stuff is a nice touch, too. Are you going to recess the trem cavity cover like the control cover, or just leave it sitting...

    intonation issue

+1 on this; I have a flipped saddle on one of mine. Also, switching from a plain to a wound G will move the optimal saddle location up towards the neck, I think.

    Bought one of these...

For 25 bucks, I don't see it being a big mistake. I've spent more money on worse things. I bought a little violin like that a few years ago and have mostly succeeded in making awful sounds come out of it at ridiculous volumes. It's pretty good for freaking out my cats. But it adds a little...

Removing Acoustic bridge and refitting. Photo Essay.

Thanks for the rec. I had heard the term before, but I never looked it up until just now. Those do look useful. But for now, I've heard enough negative things about nitro that I'm content to stay away from it.

Removing Acoustic bridge and refitting. Photo Essay.

Thanks. That makes sense about not wanting finish down in the grain; I hadn't thought of that. I don't have any spray equipment, so it'll have to be something I can brush on. I finished my last project with shellac followed by Tru-oil, and I'm pretty happy with the result, but I'm open to...

Removing Acoustic bridge and refitting. Photo Essay.

Thanks for info -- this is definitely relevant to a renovation I'm about to attempt on a junk guitar I just bought. A followup question: Suppose I refinish the top. When I put the bridge back on, I assume I'll want it to sit on a bridge-shaped unfinished section. Would it be better to mask...

    Finishing quilted maple

Excellent, I was going to suggest the same place. I believe this guy did the kind of finish you're talking about. Make sure you post pics when you've got it done. Oh, and I know you have to have heard this a billion times, but whatever you do, test on scrap first. In particular, I think...

Do you practice sitting down or standing up?

Yonce, you beat me to it -- I also find I can stand up and sit down quite correctly without much practice. If I'm playing the guitar, I'm usually standing up. The chair closest to my amp isn't really conducive to playing, and it usually has a cat sleeping in it.

A few questions on wiring/ soldering RE replacing pots and pickup.....

It sounds like that volume pot is somehow out of the circuit. You might check to make sure that none of the wires connected to that pot are touching each other; that would do it.

    strat clone?

I don't own one, but some other members around here have had positive things to say about the SX line from Rondo. From what I hear, you may want to replace the electronics, but they certainly look cool and can be gotten on the cheap.

    Writing beats

I use this one. It's laughably simple; it just reads a text file that lists where to put each sound, and pastes a bunch of wave files together.

Really changing the action of my guitar?

Fret a string at the 12th fret, and pluck the part of the string between the nut and your finger. Does it ring out? If so, take a look at that part of the string. If it's high above the fretboard in the middle, but low on both ends, the neck probably has too much relief, so try tightening the...

    SRVing up a Strat-style

I'd be tempted to use the old masking-tape and spray-paint scheme, then maybe trace the edges with a fine point sharpie to even them out. But I'm not a stickler for fine details. It seems like I've heard of a few people using this technique with some success, but I've never tried it personally.

    Tools for the job

In response to the original post, I use those little round files all the time for the same purpose. And I guess a bushing press would be a nice thing to have, but I managed to get my tuner bushings seated just fine using a 3/8" socket, a C clamp, and a little block of wood on the back. I also...

    Charvel/Jackson ?

Agreed. That site just happens to have a lot of free wiring diagrams. The only difference to watch out for is the wire colors could be different coming out of your pickups. Are the pots crackly when you turn them, or do they just not do anything? I'd check the connections to the volume pot...

    Charvel/Jackson ?

This one, perhaps? If your switch only has 4 positions, I'm not sure how that changes things, though.
