What kind of mic is this???

Waylon Jennings wouldn't sound as good without that boosted proximity effect.:D

What kind of mic is this???

Well, to me the U67 has a different sound than the U87. Similar, but yet different. Figure 8 is caused by either having (rough example) the front diaphragm to ground (0v), the back plate at 60v and the rear diaphragm at 120v, or some combination of the same. Varying the voltage of the pattern...

What kind of mic is this???

It might be an original U87 (before the ai series, which switched to using an XLR connector). It could also be a U67 if that's a Tuchel connector with the mic mount built in. The video is so grainy its hard to tell.

    Does anybody recognize this mic?

Never were more true words ever spoken, but if you were to ask Klause Heyne he'd say any mic tech worth their salt would know what a "true" 47 sounds like. FLEA also makes the basic mechanics for the Berliner U77.

Apex 460 vs Neumann U87ai hear for yourself

Could someone explain to me how mumbling into a microphone constitutes a "shootout" or reveals a mics strengths or weaknesses? How the hell can you tell from that? Do me a favor, try singing some loud 'S' sounds into both as hard as you can, then lets hear that? Try some acoustic...

New MXL mics - New Flagships

D19? Ouch! Very rare indeed. I would say keep your eye out for a D24. Same capsule, but then you'd have to render a D24 inoperable. I have a friend I can ask in case there's a method for surgery to the diaphragm wiring.

So, what's wrong with your D12?

    Does anybody recognize this mic?

Yeah! Externally Wunder is virtually identical in every way except that. That's the only detail they miss. Internally they're not off by a lot either. The only thing that's different is the choice of output and filtering capacitors. I've heard shootouts where the Wunder was almost...

New MXL mics - New Flagships

See, now that would be interesting! I'd like to see a tube mic running a classic trafo coupled circuit, but with a fixed bias capsule! Maybe this conversation doesn't belong in this thread anymore.

New MXL mics - New Flagships

That might be interesting. Might help bolster my view of the products and commitment. The ears are the best judge! I live nearby too, just in Redondo. I might be scared to walk in now though.:o

New MXL mics - New Flagships

I just saw a replacement capsule for a D12 on eBay a few weeks ago. Might still be there.

New MXL mics - New Flagships

Duh! I don't know why that slipped my thought process. I put a big focus on that coupling cap personally. If I understand what I've read elsewhere, allowing too large a value in there (or nothing at all) without having a high enough polarization voltage to the capsule can actually result in a...

How are you going to keep the DC from flowing into the next stage?

    Does anybody recognize this mic?

It could very well be a U47 long body. After stopping the clip to look closely it doesn't have the flattened top that the U47 has in its grill. It isn't completely round like it looks to be in this clip. If its completely round I'd say its a Wunder Audio CM7. Hard to tell though.

New MXL mics - New Flagships

Sure can. Question is, does anybody? I mean well? Sure Rupert knew what the hell he was doing but he's a genius. Most of the classic Neve sound was in the transformers BTW. The only place I would ever decouple, or rather remove a coupling capacitor would be at the capsule side. I love GOOD...

New MXL mics - New Flagships

I've heard your stuff. You endorsement of them could do way more damage to their rep than my first post ever could, and even I don't think they deserve that.:p That being said, yeah mshilarious makes a good point. I really have a problem with any budget mic that uses a K67 capsule so its unfair...

New MXL mics - New Flagships

Can't answer fully right now because I'm busy at work, but i would say yes, my chief problem is that I'm not a fan of the K67 capsule in any way.;)

New MXL mics - New Flagships

Great, but all their flagship mics are tube. Gain isn't cheap in a tube circuit. It comes with a price. In a tube microphone if you add 1pF, 2pF, 4 pF, up to 10pF of feedback from the anode back to the grid the gain decreases by orders of magnitude. This is a common method of using negative...

New MXL mics - New Flagships

Roy, I've owned more than a few MXL microphones. Well over 20. 6 years ago I began studying microphone construction and engineering in great detail. To the point of obsession. I've made friends with some of the best people in that field. There are some things I can tell based simply by what I've...
