This is the section that will explain the "magic" of the Ck12. Hard to duplicate and expensive to manufacture, but Tim Campbell has been able to recreate that same magic with his versions of the same design. AKG's CK12 capsule Tim's capsules really hit the mark! Tim Campbell His work is...

Check this article and go into some of the details in the curio section. It will explain the models and differences and you'll see why newer models don't really meet the AKG legend. Story of the AKG C414

I think that would be a fine mic! Right along the lines of a multi-pattern 414. All the 414 series are good, depending on the source. It is still is based on the nylon capsule (not that it is a bad thing) which is a bit darker and flatter than a CK12 capsule would be. The Ck12 brass capsule...

Jim, if you're looking for an AKG and really want the brass ring (literally) save up and get one of the earlier 414 models. 414E I believe. It had the brass CK12 capsule, which is the same capsule as the C12 and Ela M 250/251. If you can get your hands on one of those you'll have a truly amazing...

U87?! The best?? i don't know in what little world you live, but a U87 is hardly "the best". One of, maybe, but it sure isn't the pinnacle. Not by any means.

    New mics for Boxing Day?

I might get one of those on Packing Tape Day.

Rock Drums according to a crazy Grammy Producer: just passing the word along...

Dead rooms and duct tape. I knew a guy who taped empty cigarette boxes to his heads. So glad that shit is over.

    Microphone Directionality

Would the gain of the tube and the output level of the transformer contribute? I noticed that even though I set the peaks to match, the meters did not respond identical on the dynamics all the time. Just the peak levels.

    Microphone Directionality

Normally that would be a good explanation, but I do test every component for microphonics as I do a build. I even check capacitors for microphonics (and have found quite a few). I think the Miller effect is the most likely culprit. BTW, secondary tests showed it may have been the directionality...

    Microphone Directionality

I've had a private response which suggests the difference might be caused by the "miller effect" do to capacitance and how tube circuits and transformers deal with gain in their relative stages vs. solid state mics and how you would have to set the gain of the amp before implementing the...

    Microphone Directionality

Through more experimenting I think I'm answering my own question. I'm finding that the louder the source, the less variation in the ambient pickup. That stands to reason though, based on sensitivity. Would that still imply condensers pick up more room based on volume levels? I guess I need to...

    Microphone Directionality

Link? I must have missed that post. I look up to you very much and respect your knowledge a great deal, but I'd really like to see just how you measured the ambient levels vs. close source to determine the accuracy. How many sample sources did you try? I'm assuming it was a rather large pool...

    Microphone Directionality

I probably should have made my statement more clearly. I thought that's how I typed it, but I didn't. The thought in my head is that most ribbon motors are be default figure of eight, but yes their directionality can be changed through mechanics just like any transducer.

    Microphone Directionality

A condenser mic has a very light-weight diaphragm, which reacts to transients faster and has a higher sensitivity. Ribbons are very light as well, but the motor reacts differently compared to a capacitive transducer and also requires a high amount of gain. Ribbons are also figure of eight...

New Bargain "Pre-Modded Tube Mic" For The Soldering Skill Impaired...

In all honesty, I think they devised that case as a way to keep the transformer in position instead of rattling around. Its held in there with double sided foam tape, as you well know.

New Bargain "Pre-Modded Tube Mic" For The Soldering Skill Impaired...

Its a very simple procedure and a direct fit. PM me for some more info. The only thing I would want to check is the capsule bias voltage to make sure its not too high.

New Bargain "Pre-Modded Tube Mic" For The Soldering Skill Impaired...

No real need for mumetal inside a mic. It isn't near a power transformer. The body of the mic + ground is shielding enough (usually). I saw this mic on eBay yesterday. Looks like he's spot on for the most part. I would change the capsule to a K47 style for sure. I'd also ditch the 2.2uF for a...

    Mic Debate.

Tell you what, John. You're a very smart individual. Look at my clues and see if you can provide the answers. Then neither of us have broken the rules and the info is available. I know you'd be able to digest the info and respond with the right answers. Let's see if we can do this. We can PM...

    Mic Debate.

I understand your position John, I really do. The fact remains, however, that I was specifically asked not to give the information I've learned out. I have a friend who's very well known in that field and he agreed to mentor me under the agreement that what he tells me is "for my ears only". I...
