Something you might not know about condenser microphone capsules

Most likely any build-up or contamination on a diaphragm is not some form of "metal oxide". If it were gold oxide it would be dark brownish red, and any other metal oxide collected would appear as a salt. The things that build up on diaphragms are either spit or electrostatic particles like...

It also does it almost immediately after being exposed to air.

I also don't see anything on the diaphragm, except a lack of gold because its been scrubbed off.

    CAD M179 on sale

I got mine today. Pluged it in to test it out and... ...its noisy as hell! Now I have to go through the return process. (sigh)

Something you might not know about condenser microphone capsules

In Germany the "capsule" is considered the housing portion of the mic which is comprised of the grill, its support structure and the transducer. In this conversation what we are examining, that part that converts sound to electrical energy, should really be referred to as the "transducer".

    CAD M179 on sale

Aaaargh! Now I'm fighting myself about this. Yes, its a darn good general purpose mic. For that price I want one. The problem is I don't need another mic! Someone talk me down or give me a good reason.

    AKG Solid Tube/Behringer T-1

7th time through, there is no question that the AKG has a bigger sound. The T-1 just lacks bottom. Sounds thin.

    AKG Solid Tube/Behringer T-1

At first i had a hard time distinguishing between the two, but then it became apparent! The AKG just sounded bigger, but perhaps its a bit skewed based on dynamics. On the T-1 there's a section where the vocal is as loud as sung into the AKG, where normally the vocal is sung at a different...

No, what you referred to was a "Takman REX plate resistor", and I was confused as to whether you meant the B+ feed resistor going to the plate or the grid resistor. I usually use a 2W 100k at the B+ feed to keep the noise low, but look for a high quality low noise thick film or carbon oxide(?)...

Polycarbonate 250v. I thought I'd try that instead of a usual polystyrene. Did you mean grid resistor?

Neumann Mics: Are they the best in the biz?

What about Bock Audio or Soundelux?

LOL! Agreed! But how about running both halves in parallel, or using the second triode for converting impedance? Do the same effects apply? What's your opinion on that? you should hear running a C12 circuit through an EF86 with the right transformer. (or perhaps you already have?).

    Blue Spark

Exactly!! They've renamed the 'low cut' or 'high pass filter' as a 'focus control'! Can anyone say 'trying to appeal to dumb users'? Snake oil anyone?

I'm skeptical of most things Behringer, but I'd have to say, if they used a Panasonic 1/2" electret capsule (not saying they do, but if they did) I would be all over that mic! There are some Panasonic cardioid SDC's that just sound spectacular! I'm interested in seeing what Behringer has in that...

    Neumann Pronunciation

Absolutely correct. I might add for most Americans that the pronunciation sounds more like "Noy-Mahn", with the founder's first name being pronounced like "Gayeorg".

Well, be careful when you say "the same upgrade (as the 460)". There are various recommendations for the "Apex 460 mod" and a lot if the information on the web is incorrect. I saw one guy who posted a schematic that I'm sure sounded very good in cardioid, but in his schematic he removed a...

    No Name Tube Microphone

Yes I did. What I ended up with in the stock mic sounded very much like an off-the-shelf Apex 460. Its no wonder either. The circuits and components are almost identical in every way with the exception of pattern control and no cathode follower. Other than that, every components is the same type...

    AKG Perception 820 Tube Condenser

That's exactly what I was thinking. The 820 looks just like the iSK tube mic I purchased with a slightly differently machined/painted body. Its a very, very decent mic really. I wanted to mod the hell out of it but ended up only replacing the output cap and changed 2 electrolytics to Black...
