    Public Mix Contest #7

I've uploaded my entry. We just had a baby and I've had no time to finish this.

    E. Guitar Harshness

The audio clip is the best way for us to confirm the advice. In general, the area around 5K is harsh. A little dip in this region may help. Notice I said dip, not shelf. Try and post a clip. :)

please give my track a listen and help me improve it

Not too bad... Take a look at the snare eq and reverb (lack of) Like NL5 said, the vocal sounds out of place. Am I hearing a bad room or a small room reverb patch? I think this may work better with a larger room sound with some predelay, but less in the mix. The guitars seems to be working...

    SM57 on snare

What position 'is' the bright and snappy placement?

    Free multitrack software

He asked about free software. Kristal. I've only looked at the demo briefly and it seemed to work. Can't beat it for free. If you're planning on spending any money, seriously consider Samplitude 6 studio. Blow out for 79 bucks or so. You won't find a better deal.

??? Whats up man? I don't see anyone saying anything to you like that? Did I miss something?

    Public Mix Contest #6

Well put. :) If I was getting paid to mix, and the producer said 'leave all the tracks intact", I would understand that completely. For this exercise, I personally don't think it mattered. There are mixes (with missing parts) that sounded far better than the ones with all the stuff in place.

    Public Mix Contest #6

Bryan spelled the 'no mutes' rule out very clearly on this contest. I think if that was stated for PM5, I would have definately been listening for it. Big blue???? :)

    Public Mix Contest #6

Yes, we need three judges. First, Eric had very limited time to compile his scores, only to have them sit for almost a week. Furthermore, had he more time to listen, he would have been able to hear things which he obviously didn’t. I’m not blaming him, he simply was rushed to get it done...

After doing this five times, I'm at a loss for words. I'm done here. :) Congratulations Gary! Instrument flight rules. :) PTuser- I feel exactly like you. I'm flabergasted that I score a 'fair' in the balance of mix elements cat. No offense Eric - thank you for judging.

Eddie- I say lets use your tracks for MC7. I can always do next if nothing else happens. As for judges, we can figure that out as we go. I vote for you to start the new thread. :)

So what's in store for the next contest? Anyone have any ideas? I would say it's time for some new material. Pop, Jazz, real drums, guitars??? If there are no ideas, I may have something from a CD I mixed last year.

    Public Mix Contest #6

Yikes. In my opinion, I think you should just get points off in the 'mix elements' category. We're all here to learn, right? How the heck is anyone going to learn if they can't even see where they end up in the categories? I’d be pretty upset to find out I just spent many hours on someone...

    Public Mix Contest #6

Don't ask me - I'm not judging this time around. This topic of mixers discretion has been a hot topic on a few other boards. For this contest, I believe the job of the mixer is to do what the producer says. The producer in this case is Giles. On the other hand, if I were to hire a hot mix...

Wow, I'm listening to the mixes... I've already heard four mixes which violated the rules. :)
