    421s on drums

I second that. Guitars, drums, vocals, horns, etc. They're not a standard for nothing.

    Opinions on 1966 Bassman amps...

I've got a '65 bassman and its loud as fuck. Sounds great on bass too. I've heard plenty of silverfaced ones as well and they're loud. They're great guitar amps and OK on bass if you don't mind it being a little (more than a little) dirty sounding. Some of you guys need your ears checked.

    Octave pedal with acoustic guitar

I believe that the guy from white stripes uses the EH Hog pedal, which will "do" chords, but its well over your budget. The blue box is neat, but it induces distortion as well as the octave down. I own the whammy and its pretty cool, and will do many things to your signal. I often use it as a...

    Mic choice for disotorted guitars

Anything? I've used 57s, 58s, 91s, 609s, 421s, 121s, I5s, Cheap $50 condensers, CX112s, omnis, just about anything and have gotten a good sound. I bet if I put a regular 57 and a transformerless 57 against the same amp in the same mix, your buddy hotapples couldn't tell the difference. Use...

How to get a fat, vintage distortion/overdrive from a modeler (PodXT, Amplitube etc.)

This weekend I'm going to try and set up a "shootout" of sorts. I'm going to use a pod, '65 bassman, plexi marshall, peavy butcher, zvex nano, blues junior, and maybe a jc-120 all into a 4x12 marshall. I'd like to see if you guys can really tell the difference.

    Will I do damage? Reaming

Reaming will generally cause much pain. Re-amping will not if done correctly. People usually use a di box backwards or a re-amping box.

    Pedal placement

Tuner is usually first or last. I have mine first, if you accidentally leave a pedal on, it will affect your signal and make tuning more difficult. I'd put distortion next. Delay last. Other effects generally go before delay because your "effected signal" is the one you want to delay. If...

    bass fuzz (distortion)

The big muff is great. I own a few versions of it. My favorite is my '78 big muff, not sure what you can get them for on ebay, perhaps in your budget. I like the big green russian one as well. Another favorite pedal for bass is the comptortion, its the one made famous by the bass player from...

    Big Muff Pi

Yeah, it wouldn't work like that. You'd be combining signals at the very least. Maybe if you took out the existing knobs and replaced them with double gang knobs. You'd have to keep the circuits separate and by sending them to one tone, volume, and sustain knob you'd be combining them at...
