    Stabilizing the 'ee' vowel

^^ N2, it's an identical copy, lol! VHS Yes, that's exactly what I discovered after some practice. I got the "singer's smile" thing going a bit more, and created more space between cheek and teeth. That makes the ee a lot more stable, and the vocal tract shape is good for naturally amplifying...

Should you practice singing with your recording setup?

Keep practising with this. It will be of benefit to whichever way you choose for real. The more difficult, the greater the benefit. That is the beauty of practice scenarios. Practise different ways -- headphones loud, headphones soft, no headphones, from memory (to hone phrasing), etc. etc...

Have I improved or gotten worse?

Appoggio technique works well for all kinds of genres and singing... (These guys have a series of videos, and I have found them to be top drawer). Michael Trimble Franco Tenelli

    Great Vocal Exercise!

[Vocal practice stuff, so forgive the sound quality] Here is a great exercise that I want to share with anybody practising singing. Record a clip of yourself singing. Then sing over it, while playing it back at normal to full volume, preferably through headphones. Try to use a contrasting...

Have I improved or gotten worse?

Misterblue, I am still hearing pitch problems. It is true that the key to it is relaxation, but you need to build crucial muscle strength in order to relax. If I were to pick up a guitar and try to do what you are doing, it wouldn't work, no matter how much I relax. That is because I haven't...

    I'm not a "singer"...

I hear this kind of comment from time to time, and I have no idea what people are talking about. The vocals sound "forward" enough, to me. What do other people think?

    Does this harmonize?

I don't think my musical taste has ever narrowed. It has always expanded. So new doesn't replace old, it just adds. I like to keep it that way.

    Does this harmonize?

But it isn't necessarily wrong, just different. And your ear can acclimatize to that difference. Mine did with the Mexican music I was given. No argument with this. I've kind of moved on from referring to my.....my experiment.... Heavens knows what my ears are conforming to right now. Clearly...

    Does this harmonize?

But surely, you must have imbibed some of the theory subconsciously, because a lot of it is convention and acquired taste, not law of nature. Otherwise unfamiliar traditional "world music" wouldn't sometimes sound awkward. So, a "good ear" would mean knowing which sound belongs to, or is allowed...

    Does this harmonize?

Maths means you have to remember fewer rules. You understand, rather than just accept, why things are the way they are, and why some things are anomalous. Even the really basic videos I have seen in the past get into why one interval is perfect and another one isn't. Maybe it is just...

    Does this harmonize?

Thanks. Right now, the thing I find most valuable is finding huge gaps in my knowledge. Not that I am naive. I knew there was heaps to harmony, I just didn't know what. But I got the stomach and patience for the challenge. Fortunately, my background is in maths, so I've played around with how...

    Does this harmonize?

Ha ha! Figures! The second one was the only one I didn't make up on the fly. I used actual parts from the song. What it is, is that my ears simply have no idea of western standard, which makes sense because a lot of the music I listen to isn't western. It could be worse than that of course, and...

    Does this harmonize?

Nope. But I'll come back to it, once I've studied the subject a bit.

    Does this harmonize?

Hmm...thanks Steenamaroo and Rob.. I definitely need to study the theory behind this stuff. It's clear to me that I know next to NOTHING about standard chords. For example, that second line coming in "a tone higher than it should", my ears wouldn't know which was standard and which was not...

More practice. Oops, slightly unsynchronized! VIDEO KILLS THE RADIO STAR ----> VIDEO KILLS THE RADIO TZAR! Hopefully, all five pitches are still distinguishable at the end. (Nothing analytical, I just dived in as I saw fit :o ) VKTVS53003LEP by kickingtone | Free Listening on SoundCloud

Advice for the singer if you were mixing this?

I try to sing from memory after an initial listen of the song (just as a practice thing). Each clip is one take, but, as you pointed out, the timing is bad. I need to learn to hear the instrumentals in my head, so that I get the timing correct, instead of guessing. Those "lip smack" sounds...

Advice for the singer if you were mixing this?

Hi, I practise singing as a hobby. I have been told point blank in the past (just from a vocal track) "you can't lead like that, but maybe it would be ok as backing vocals". So, I'd like to please ask people who actually mix vocals for advice. What should I look out for, and would either of...

    Beginner seeking feedback (nirvana, skynyrd)

Beginner or not, you still have to think like an artist. You are responsible for the sound you want to build for your voice. Style and tone is all very subjective. What one person tells you, another person won't agree with. Best you learn to appreciate your voice, put the package together and...

    Stabilizing the 'ee' vowel

Hi! Can I borrow your ears for a few seconds, please? (Apologies to anyone who knows and likes this Beatles song. I've hacked bits of it from long lost memory. I know what it's like when folk mess with favourites, but I always do this with practice stuff.) I heard that the 'ee' vowel...

Who to trust? ears or ..

Thanks. Yeah, I generally understand the theory of impedance matching from physics, and the quantity Z. I can even derive Z from an LRC circuit. It just strikes me that there's a lot more going on here, especially in practical terms. Great learning opportunity.
