    8-track mixer -> 8-track recorder

    Yes, it does have inserts; thanks for the tip. I do leave the eq'ing and effects for mix-down anyway, so that seems a simple fix.

    8-track mixer -> 8-track recorder

    This is sort of a newbie question crossbred with a Tascam question. I'm mixing 8 tracks through an M-208 8 channel mixer into a TSR-8. The M-208 has buss assign buttons for "1-2" and "3-4," which when selected allow you to then pan to left (1 or 3) or right (2 or 4). However, I can't figure...

    Which Mac to buy??

    I agree with the previous posts. More RAM will help you out MUCH MORE than a faster processor. For example, I have a 333 Mac with 192 megs; it completes some processes that a 400 / 128 can't do at all. When you break down the pricing of most retailers, it's better to save money by sacrificing...

    Need advice on buying first multitrack..

    Instead of the 414, I'd look at a 424MKII or III. There are enough gear junkies around who upgrade out of fear to leave quite a few of these machine around for $180-$250 used. IMHO it's a better machine, and the money you save can go into the more important parts of the signal chain: microphones.

    1/2" tape suppliers

    Has anyone bought 1-pass 1/2" tape from a supplier like TapeTape.com? If so, how noticeably diminished is the sound quality? For $18, I don't hope to get perfect tape, but for loud guitars is it OK?

    Melodies

    Since my son was born, I've found all these shiny plastic objects around my house that play various lullabies; they have slowly crept into my brain again. In an effort to debrief myself, I've sampled a bunch of these toys and done two things: (a) played the samples backwards; and (b) chopped...

    Newbie's question on used analog gear

    I agree. Buy the deck and mixer for the following reason: It's not new. You can turn around and resell it for a minimal loss, whereas new equipment would never resell for even 75% what you paid. Plus, it's good stuff. The person selling it probably gets Musicians' Friend catalogs every week...

    TSR-8 manual

    Another reason to buy a tsr-8; I can fix a tsr-8 much better than a disposable MD8. But I don't mind you digital people in the least. If you've got disposable income, dispose away. I never buy new. You can take the showroom hit for me. The White Album sounds pretty good to me. The...

    Best lyrics you've ever read (written)?

    How about Will Oldham? These are from memory, so I may have mis represented him on a word here or there: "Come little dog, love a little dog, come a little dog... Where did the little dog come from? Little dog came from you. Little brown spot on his little black head, little dead dog, I love...

    Ideal state of mind/environment

    There's a Son Volt song with a line I swear is from a Cormac McCarthy novel, and whenever I hear it I'm reminded how useful other people's words are. A couple times I've found one good line in someone's work (never a song, always a novel or poem) and the rest of the lyrics organize around it...

    I sing like a dying pig in the heat of a miscarriage, HELP ME!!!

    A lot of the recordings I like most have really "unique" vocal styles: Jad Fair, The Wedding Present, Will Oldham. I think one of the things that gets overlooked in music is how to exploit the voice's unusual character to exagerrated levels. Turn the gain up and whisper into the mic. Get...

    Cassette to CD with a Mac

    I have a cheap old Aiwa cassette deck connected by a left/right RCA-to-mini plug cable (Radio Shack $3). As soon as you hit "play" on the cassette, the audio signal enters the Mac (I have a 333 iMac, $800). Now, if you have selected "Sound In" from your audio chooser, you'll hear the audio...

    which 1/2" 8 track recorder?

    Two q's: 1. Is there any truth to the argument that the TSR performs better horizontally opposed to vertically? Something about allignment issues? 2. And if I get a TSR used, do I have to get it calibrated to the type of tape stock I use? I read that both of these are issues with Otaris...

    Compressor Question.

    As re: the RNC, I've been using it since December with a 424mkII. I record guitar, drum machine, sampler & vox typically, and the amazing thing I've found w./ the RNC is that you can find settings (in Nice mode) that will work for both guitar & vox. I've tried the Nano and a Beringer (sp.?)...
