Recording sound cards would work fine with games, although you're probably going to have to pass up stuff like EAX, which those soundblaster cards almost definitly have. However, a card like the 1212 works fine for games, but I would argue the soundblaster does NOT work fine for recording...

No, the firebox is 6in. 2pres, 2lines, 2spdif. Thanks for clearing up the spdif some for me, I wasn't clear whether that could be used to connect pres or if it was just some sort of digital thing. The spdif/analog converter though, is this just an adapter, or an actual piece of equipment...

If I read this right, you're trying to mix (or master, or whatever its called) with headphones. General concensus is that this is bad. Do what you have to to mix through speakers (you can get some cheap studio monitors like the krk rokit 5's). This is probably why they sound good while...

Do you need to do mixing? If so, don't forget about monitors. Also, and inspire might work just as well for you rather than a firebox (and save you $100). They both are limited by 2 pres, and 2 line ins. Midi and spdif seem like the only major differences.

I was just checking in on this thread, and thought I'd add some basic info (not sure how much you know on this). When setting volume levels, make sure w/ the initial recording you're just getting nice hot levels out of every input. You can always drop the volume after the fact.

I'm assuming the emu card you were looking at was the 1616(m) which has the pcmcia card, along with a connection to a breakout box. This box is where the xlr plugs in. The card itself only has an 1/8" headphone jack, and is meant only for listening to music without the breakout box connected.

I believe the new belkin cards use TI. If you find one in a retail outlet let me know where, because I need to buy one from a place with a kind return policy.

Edit: Yay!!! I seem to have fixed the problem. I reformatted my hard drive, and installed a different copy of windows i got through a student program. I had previously been using the acer copy of windows. Anyway, it's either the copy of windows I was using had some tweaks my firebox didn't...

I'm rather new to this, and not quite sure what you mean by songs sounding like one instrument (what type of music?), but I'm guessing the big difference you're hearing from your recordings and radio is EQing (this makes the mix mesh) and like you said, volume levels.

What if I don't use the metronome in cubase? First, I cant get it to work for some reason, second I don't trust it as all audio played back plays jumpy. A jumpy metronome just doesn't cut it :P Can hitpoint detection be used? When I make the hitpoints, it does detect the first strum...

So, for some reason playback using my firebox doesn't work right. The tracks randomly skip on playback making overdubbing next to impossible since it throws out the rhythm of the track I'm trying to play over. So... what I'm trying to do is just play to my metronome and sync up the audio...

The faderport seems like a neat piece of gear, is there anything similar to that out there? Looks like it has a small footprint.
