    Recording Distortion staight from Head

Does that include boxes like the TC Electronic G-Major and/or Rocktron Xpression? I've been thinking about one of those, because I need a *good* chorus, tremelo, and delay. What would you suggest instead?

How do I set up my rig?

Tell him that the aural exciter might make his guitar sound better when he's practicing by himself, but when he plays with other instruments, in the band, it will make his tone suck.

    Mesa Boogie sound samples....???

Contrary to popular belief, Mesa makes a wide range of amps with varying sounds. A lot of people on this board associate Mesa with the "nu-metal" sound that people get with the rectifier series. If that's the sound you're looking for, then you want to look at the dual and triple recs. There are...

How can I avoid the fizzies when recording guitar?

Modellers are fizzy. You could try turning down the gain. I 2nd the tube comment. Modellers are fine for practice - I practice with one at night while my wife is sleeping sometimes, and even make scratch/demo recordings with it because it is quick. But for anything serious, I fire up the Boogie.

    What Mesa to get?

I have a Mesa DC-3, an old 30-watt 1x12 combo. It's too loud for home use and small venues. I'm looking into an attenuator for it.

    dbx 286a Preamp

I have a 286a that I got a good deal on a few years ago. All the vocals in this song were done with it. It's nothing special, but it gets the job done in my small spare-bedroom studio. The compressor is weird... rather than setting the threshold and ratio like a normal compressor, you turn up...

    is this finnished?

The lead guitar tone really gives me the shivers, like nails on a chalkboard. I agree the vocals need some verb. Overall it sounds pretty good, but I would not send it to the master just yet.

    Home Studio 2 XL

XL comes with a sampler and some extra effects. You can record all those instruments fine with the basic version. Here's a comparison: http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/HomeStudio/Comparison.asp

    The 3630!

Yeah, I was thinking about modding mine. I never use the gate anyway, because it clicks when it goes in and out.

    Muddy Water Spins (acoustic/folk rock)

Thanks for listening. How strange that you would suggest a shaker in the intro - we have been back and forth on that same idea. I should probably track and and see how it sounds. I appreciate your comments. Dave

    What mini-keyboard for Sonar?

Man, all this time I've wasted practicing the guitar and bass.... and all along, all I had to do was buy one of these. I wish someone had told me sooner. You've got to be kidding me! They are going to be so impressed! Dude, I will look so cool! All the rock stars I love strap computer...
