Tc Electronic G Force VS. Line 6 POD XT PRO

These are different things. One is a preamp/modeler. The other is an effects processor.

    Sound Engineering

If you want to be a software enginneer, you're going to need a degree in CS. A minor won't cut it. Go look at the job listings at digidesign if you don't believe me. Also, I hope you like math.

    guitar FX--without any processors

Back in college, when I was using an analog tape 4-track, I was a big fan of backwards delay. Record the guitar, flip the tape over, playback the guitar track, which is now backwards, add delay, and record the delay to a new track. Then when you flip the tape back to side A, the guitar is...

    efx processors

No. You patch the fx processor into an aux send & return on your mixer, and then send some of each channel (vox, guitars, etc.) into the aux mix. You will need a different processor (or processor channel) for each aux mix that you make.

Sounds great, Chris. I like the new guitar part, and the vocals sit much better.

Vocals. "I SSSwam acroSSSS to you today" It's not bad, and some of it may be MP3 conversion artifacts. Just a minor nitpick. ;) Nice track, though. I like it.

My first crack at the grinder

Sounds great. How did you do the vocal effect at the beginning on "The age of misconception..."? I know that's a standard trick, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Comments on my latest track please

Hey Chris, Just a few things that I noticed: 1) You might pan the drums a little wider, or at least bring that crash cymbal in a little bit. It sounds funny with the drums in the center and the crash in the extreme left. 2) I'd turn down the vocals. This is purely my opinion, but I'd like...

    Extreme Metal = Electro-Shocks

Panning. Everything is crammed right up the middle. It's a very narrow mix. Also, the guitars need to go way up. Did you doubletrack them? If not, you should do that. Then pan one left 75% and the other right 75% and adjust from there.

OnStage Stands. Musicians Friend's cheap stands.

Yeah, there is no counterweight on the boom. It will hold a LDC if you don't extend it all the way. You can also make sure the mic is above one of the legs. Or make your own counterweight.

    Effect Order?

Since compression raises the noise floor, I would think you'd want your gate before the compressor.

    Scratching out ideas

Yeah, that's similar to how I work. Compose on the guitar, then pick drum loops, record the guitar, then write the bass part. It's easier for me to do bass after drums because I want the bass to lock with the kick. Since I'm working with loops (pre-recorded acoustic drums), I have to pick the...

Mesa owners... Still maintain "fixed" bias?

In the article I linked to above, Randall Smith himself talks about why he went that route. The way I understand it, an adjustable bias lets the amp compensate for tubes that are out of spec. Mesa's position is that they will fix the bias in the amp, and then only sell you "good" tubes that...

Mesa owners... Still maintain "fixed" bias?

I figure Mesa knows more about amps than I do, so I leave my amp alone and buy their tubes. I got it because I like the way it sounded, and have no real desire to change it. Here is the manual for my amp: http://www.mesaboogie.com/manuals/Dual%20Cal%20DC-3.pdf Read the section called "Bias...

    small scale midi switching...

http://www.tech21nyc.com/midimoose.html I just stumbled upon this. They say its new. I think it only sends program changes, but that should allow you to change presets.

    small scale midi switching...

I've got a Mesa DC-3. It's a sweet little 35W 1x12 combo, pretty versatile. That's pretty much my setup: PRS -> Wah -> DC-3 with the G-Major in the FX loop and the 1010 controlling it all. The 1010 has two relays that could be used to switch amp channels as well, but it made more sense to...

    small scale midi switching...

I use the FCB 1010 with my G-Major. My approach is a little different that Scottgman's... Instead of using each switch to toggle each effect, I use each switch to change to a different user patch on the G-Major. Since the G-Major can also switch channels on my amp, I can go from a clean...

    Amp Noise:

It's most likely the power in your new house. Try a power conditioner, or take the amp to a friend's house and try it there.
