Can't Line Up My Drums With The Tune!

Hey Doc, If they start out in time and then drift apart, it sound to me like a sample rate issue. Were both drum part and the rest of the audio parts exported at the same sample rate? Do they play at the right pitch? I had this window up and was doing some other work before I posted. Looks...

ITB Mixing, how good can you get it? (CLA content)

Do the other way around. Compress first and then EQ. Or, if you're EQing first and compressing later, then take out some of the lows from the material so the low frequencies don't drive the compressor too hard. Keep in mind that if you EQ first and them compress, the compressor will affect the...

how do you do this? (part 2) (link)

Not sure exactly what you're referring to. Nothing particularly unusual is popping out at me. Can you elaborate, and maybe give the time when you hear what you're referring to?

    Worst sounding Cd's ever

In summary, all CDs sound bad. We should go back to vinyl :D

ITB Mixing, how good can you get it? (CLA content)

I see. Here's another take on the subject of bigness. It's all about proportions and contrast. If you pay close attention, everything will likely will NOT be in your face. There will be some elements, the important ones, that will. When everything is BIG, the overall mix ends up sounding small...

ITB Mixing, how good can you get it? (CLA content)

Part of it can be that you're comparing your stuff to mastered trackes, which are likely compressed and limited, especially if they are recent releases. Given that, your raw mix is likely to sound much quieter compared to commercial releases, which may give the impression that they sound small.

    tuning VST drums? (Steven Slate)

Indeed. As I do electronic music, all my "drums" are samples, sometimes even comprising of several layers of different samples which then comprise a single drum sound such as a kick or a snare. There have been times where I've tuned the drums to be sympathetic to the key the music was in. At...

Yamaha DX7 repair - worth it?

I'd get Native Instruments FM8. Much easier to program :D I'll duck now :)

    Mastering Engineer wants Individual tracks....

That's not "fine" at all. With tape, you can never be sure that all your tracks will play at the same exact speed when you record them back into DAW track by track, even if you have solid sync. Red flags all over the place indeed.

Another Poll...What Desk Do You Use...

Don't have a board. Don't need one. Although a controller would be nice. However, if I ever get the $$ and the actual need, I'd probably go for something like:

    Mastering Engineer wants Individual tracks....

No. If he wants individual tracks, then he's really a mix engineer :D Or your mix is totally f'd up (has he heard the stereo mixdown?) I'd steer clear. Armenians have a saying "The expensive option is cheaper". Meaning, in the end you are likely to spend less money by going with the option...

    Worst sounding Cd's ever

Just to be clear, my comments weren't about anyone "selling out" or not. It was more about subpar performance and bad production.

Mac or PC.....WHO GIVES A CRAP....

This whole "PCs are cheaper than Mac" thing just doesn't jive all that well with me. Your average Dell or HP desktop's build quality and components are not comparable to what you get in a Mac. I build my own PCs. The last one I built cost me around $2500, because I made sure to put in quality...

    My mix is hungry

Here's the thing. This is Home Recording. You're not in a pro studio with the clock ticking, with some asshole breathing down your neck, etc. So, don't be afraid to try things, push things, deliberately fuck things up. That's the only way you can find out what your equipment does, where the...

    My mix is hungry

Never trust a Guitar Center Employee. Hasn't your mom taught you that? :D Honestly the K240Ss aren't bad, certainly better than some others. But they don't seem to have the same well defined bottom as the Sennheiser hd 650s for example, and thus make it somewhat difficult to judge the low end...

    looking at control surfaces

BTW, just wanted to mention that AFAIK the Euphonix controllers are Mac only, unless they've already delivered the PC driver/software. Also, if you're looking at motorized faders, have you looked at the Mackies?

    My mix is hungry

Which AKG headphones? I have a pair of K240s headphones, and my mixes certainly tend to come out bass heavy on them. I also catch myself EQing out too much in the 2000 - 4000 Hz region. If you've got the same headphones, that would make a ton of sense.

SPDIF to my CD Recorder. How?

Check bit depth/sample rate settings. Also, some devices are finicky as to what is master and what is slave. Why not burn the project on the CDR in your computer?
