Recommend saving a little and getting the 67G modified. I had one laying around and sent it to Michael Joly to mod. Didn't know what to expect but when I got it back, I was completely floored by how much better it is. Sounds so much more open. The mic gets used a lot more now.
Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment, it is greatly appreciated. I don't know how big the drum room was that the drums were tracked in. There is a mono room mic that I absolutely crushed with a 112db big blue compressor into an EQ then a sony transmod with the ratio pulled way...
I also agree with this... Good advice. As far as compression ratios and setting go, it is totally dependent on the song and the effect you are going for. Crush the vocals and they seem to be more in your face but you will likely have to deal with breathing and de-essing
Here's a mix I did of the song Close The Door from the band Wildfires not yet released debut album; the tracks were posted as part of a mix off. A simple drums, bass and acoustic guitars tune but the drum grove is what carries the song. Really would like your comments and feed back.
Thanks
From an acoustic standard point it doesn't matter. Before you spend money on room treatment I would research/understand what room issues I'm trying to overcome.

My advice is to research room dimensions and acoustics. You can spend a considerable amount of money on room treatment. Even divisables are not ideal and your room dimensions can cause issues.
The 3630 is the bastard child of compressors; however, there is an easy mod that makes it suck less. Basically if you bypass the gate circuitry to "improve" it. Here's an brief article from Tape Op describing the mod.

Appreciate you comments. Interesting you point out the band thing. The only musician was Jackie Greene; he played & sang everything which might account for the impression that this was not like a band played it.
Thanks again.
Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. Definitely not tracked in the home recording environment. Tracked at Studio Paradiso in San Francisco using just about every high-end Telefunken mic in their product line. :)
Thanks again.
No rules at all but I agree with locking the kick and bass since without that, IMO, the song looses impact. No difference between playing live and recording, if those two elements are out of sorts, the song will not be tight.
Appreciate your feedback on my mix of this song. The artist is Jackie Greene (The Black Crows, Trigger Hippy) and the tracks were recoded as part of a Telefunken workshop he did.
The Schoeps are definitely great mics, no doubt about it but , at $3300 US (stereo pair) they are probably above the price point for most home recorders.
That being said, he never mentioned price point :)
