I have never found a de-esser that really worked without effecting the track in mostly a negative way. Now I just use volume automation and it is much better IMO. Granted a bit more work but not that bad and in the end produces a much more natural sounding vocal.

Monitors are the way to go but room treatment is as important. A $2000 monitor in an untreated room is a waste of $1999.99 IMHO.

At the end of the day it is not really about the mics...they're just tools. It ultimately comes down to knowing what to do with the tools which is the differentiator. Case in point, another song recorded using only 2 SM57s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkh3LYlwaFo sounds pretty good to me.

Just gave my mix a listen on clean ears and the guitars are muddy and vocal needs de-essing. Will correct and repost

They are surprisingly good.

You want to replace everything or just augment real drums with samples (e.g., kick, snare) . I routinely have 3 kick samples (combo of slate and superior) that I manually place in pro tools using beat detective, cut and paste. It's pretty simple and not as time consuming as you might think...

Well, let's hope there's a difference or all those folks that shelled out thousands for UAD cards and plug-ins will be pissed :-)

What's your budget? Your original post says it's around 1K but you're now talking items (2 vintech pres & a pair of Royer 121s) that individually exceed your stated budget? Not busting your stones but recommendations are driven by funds.

Yeah, I'm sure they spend considerable time getting the doubles. I would also bet that they do pitch tuning as well since I don't think Ozzy has the patience to spend all that time doing countless takes...
