Using home theater system for monitors

Line Out from the Tascam into the Line In on the Bose should work. The Bose will produce sound of course, but by design they tend to be colored for middle-of-the-road sound reproduction, for the best overall use in someone's less than ideal living room. They're not going to be good for mixing.

    Speaker positioning

Cyrano probably meant "urban myth" or "[internet] myth". Can you tilt your workstation desk so it sits in the corner where the booth is, rather than next to it? I think CoolCat was eluding to this in their post. I'm suggesting just adjusting the placement of the desk where it current resides...

C4 Multiband Compressor - Range vs Ratio?

The C6 acts as my soft/light compressor, usually one of the first things in the chain. Then I use the L3 to bring out detail and/or presence. Sounds Like the same process, but with different and multiple tools.

C4 Multiband Compressor - Range vs Ratio?

I also frequently use the L3 on vocal and drum tracks. Then again later when mastering (with obviously a different strategy in application). It's a very flexible compressor, and great at pushing things. I tried other mastering and hard limiting compressors but they didn't seem to do any...

    splat users ??

I don't use many Cakewalk specific/bundled plugins. Mostly Waves and some other products, VSTi are other products. Channel Tools is really the only thing and I have a Waves plug I could use in place of it. I used to frequently use Breverb, and I'd still consider it a decent reverb tool but I...

Complicated question about hi-hats and gates

Better strategy would be to use EQ to cut some of the hit hat so the snare can remain present. Alternatively, you could keep the gated/compressed snare and mix that in with the non-gated, raw snare track (*might* need to swap phase/make further adjustments to avoid it). This will allow you to...

What softwares and instruments can I use in order to be covering these songs?

If the songs are all synths and electronic drums then start with Kontakt. Otherwise it would be easier if you broke down what was on the tracks (which instruments). It seems we would be doing all the heavy lifting to help you.

    Layering guitars without horrible phasing

I came across this video today. It covers several tricks, tips, and techniques for getting separation of two instruments playing roughly the same thing: YouTube His focus here is on heavier music, but I can atest that these techniques will work for most any amplified instrument. Rick Beato...

Cakewalk by BandLab is finaly launched.. for FREE !!!

The problem with subscriptions in particular is that the product can be deactivated as soon as you go online, or can be programmed to require reactivation after a certain amount of time or application launches. This effectively forces a degree of control that is not yours (the owner's). You...

Cakewalk by BandLab is finaly launched.. for FREE !!!

Ditto, I have all the X3 install and update files on my hard drive (burned to dvd as well). I simply will not accept a purely digital ('streamed') copy of something so important (and eventually expensive) to me.

    waves plugins

There's clearly two different things being discussed here.... -- How the plugin is generated from analog equipment, in order to effectively and accurately emulate -- Whether the same 'effect' can be achieved using other plugins Although one relates to the other (to understand the final...

    waves plugins

My thinking as well. It seems most intended for those looking for that predictable result using an 'industry standard' tool. You can accomplish the same sound by ear using other tools, but it would take you longer if the goal is to match the curves used, saturation, etc exactly. I see most of...

    Mixing on Headphones

Many of these headphones are still viable options today even though this thread/list is getting old... One Man Band Tips

My vocal recording position (standing) was made easier by having a wireless mouse to trigger/pause recording. Setting a computer's bios fan controller to 'quiet' (or the equivalent) is useful in mitigating computer noise. Many modern motherboards offer different fan speed curves for different...

I'm holding off to see how this all ends up shaking out. Not in a hurry. Nothing is free forever, so eventually they'll announce and force everyone into some sort of revenue generating channel. If it's cost effective I'll gladly given them my money, if not I'll simply jump ship which is what...

    Manual De-essing?

I use a de-esser but with moderately aggressive settings, then for extreme sibilance I'll bring that down the rest of the way as necessary, manually. In other words... I like the results using the de-esser most of the time, and I only need to manually adjust a few times over an entire track...
