The key, IMO might be the THD vs IM (Total Harmonic Distortion vs. Intermodulation Distortion) based on trying to trick your home stereo to fit the bill. IM is going to be the spec that will create fatigue to the listener. People often get wrapped up in 'watts'-

NAD power amps would be my choice for the money if you were to use a home stereo amplifier. I have seen with a scope what happens with their 'power envelope' concept, and it is probably much less than a Hafler, etc.- at least as far as I can remember :)

I have a (DigiTech) DSP256- about 20 years old. I love many things (except the chorus) about the old bugger, but recently had a new problem. I fire it up, and the display has various configurations of either a blank or garbled...
I still have an original Juno6- always having to write down the config on paper and then it never sounds the same the next time... fortunately it sounds way cool...

I got lucky with mine- many cheaper ones are Alvarez- not Yairi's. They were always likened to "Japanese Martin's", but I think that have a little less volume and alot more 'butter' :)
