    M-Audio MIDI Uno

DD-55 is an electronic drumset/MIDI controller. You might need to google around for some troubleshooting ideas. I just looked through my package, but didn't see anything like instructions--might be some on the CD, but it hasn't turned up yet.

Which would you prefer for your fretboard: Maple, Ebony, or Rosewood?

I have ebony boards on my two best acoustics, and about evenly split rosewood/maple on my electrics, so I guess I have no real preference playing wise. Rosewood is much easier to work on, though. My main concern now is that the frets be at least mediums--I just sold off a ProTone Strat that had...

    M-Audio MIDI Uno

I've had one for a couple years, and it's always been fine--hooked up a Yamaha keyboard and DD-55 to my mac with no problems (and Yammis are supposed to have problems with macs). You might try it with a different computer to check, but it's possible you just got a defective UNO.

'Cool! $1500 for your 'old guitar!

Think there might be a little media payola going on? When one of those outfits was here last month, they got half of the front page in the local paper. Usually something like this ends up in the local news section--especially if it's making money for somebody other than the owners of the paper.

    Need help cutting a nut.

A set of jeweler's files and an X-Atco saw blade will cut a nut slot just fine--just cut a little bit at a time and check it as you go. You can spend a lot of money on books and tools, but the technique is the same--cut and file a little, then pull the string back into the slot and see if the...

    Collings disorder

Well, you could look for a Mossman, or one of the other handmade guitars from the '70's, most of them are cheaper than a Collings. That's if you just want another flavor of rosewood dreadnaught. I like my Gurian S3M, I bought it for $325.00 w/hsc in 1973, I need to do some fretwork, but it's...

    M-Audio Oxygen 8 V2 - Help!

You may need to download drivers. I got my Oxygen 8 used and didn't get any documentation with it--I was able to download the manual and the appropriately named Enigma control software. It took me some time to get everything working, but it's fine now, and much handier with transport controls.

    DIY E-Drums from Yamaha DD-50

You can do that, I've seen some info online about it. The DD50's pads are pretty bad, I used to have one. You might want to check around and see if you can get a used DD55 cheap--it's a lot better machine and would save you some work. It's also set up to mount on a snare stand.

    Oops while changing strings

Shouldn't be a problem if the posts didn't get moved--I've had this happen a few times, and no worse for the slippage. If it really screwed things up, somebody would be selling a magic tool for the job.

Cheap Amps You Wish You Had Never Sold...

Unfortunately my friend died of cancer, we friends were supposed to get some things back, but his parents hauled it all off and sold it instead. I don't blame Steve, but if I were in pissing distance of his father's grave..........

Cheap Amps You Wish You Had Never Sold...

I've been through a lot of amps, but two stand out--a National Model 22 I got in high school, 5 watts with trem and reverb into a Jensen 12. With a good speaker in a decent sized cabinet it sounded much better than your average 5 watt amp. Sold it after I got an early '60's Reverborocket. The...

    Martin Backpacker

I pulled a Backpacker gigbag off the curb a couple years ago--works great for my Airline (Supro) lap steel.

    NGD- Ibanez Artist

Nice find, don't see many 24 fret Artists around here. A friend had one with a locking tremolo, it was pretty nice after we blocked the bridge.

    Budget Les Pauls

I've worked on several Gibsons that should have been in the dumpster. Being in a college town, I've had the opportunity to check out a couple older Tokais that would give a production LP a run for the money. My heavy mahogany guitar is a mid '90's Hamer Sunburst--it works just fine for me and...

    Gotta love it

I wish the Goodwill here priced things like that--they usually want $70.00 for anything with strings on it. I have several refurbed guitars and three Curbside Upgrade amps, I just swapped necks on one of my Squier strats--now it has 22 frets. The donor Squier came out of a trash can in the...

Har! I just bought "Drums" for $40 at the pawnshop

I picked up one of those DD-50s at the Salvation Army for $25.00 with a Ludwig snare stand. I sold the stand to a drummer for $40.00, and started tinkering with the drums since I could use headphones and nobody would hear me screwing around. Both the DD50 and the DD55 work well for MIDI, though...

    5 string bass question...

If you still have the original strings on the bass, I'd make a new set top priority. The Rogue instruments I've played seemed to all have rough, dead strings, even when new. Plus who knows how long it sat in a warehouse before somebody bought it.

    Hamer guitars?

I've played several USA Hamers, they were all excellent guitars. I bought a 1996 Hamer Sunburst Flattop (Korean), and it's almost as nice. Real mahogany and better workmanship than your average Korean guitar. Considering all the repairs I've done on Gibsons, I'd definitely recommend a Hamer.
