    Confounded Tape Button

Groovy, thanks! I've googled the cards a few times, sufficed to say this is the line that goes over my head. From the sounds of it, for me to get 8-16 outs I'd have spend far more than we have. I think I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around a recording product that gives you so many...

Do you always gate your kick mic channel?

So Boulder (or anyone), is there any reason to gate in the mix if you didn't gate during recording?

What makes for a great comp? EQ?

For the sake of discussion, Btyre, would you exbound? What do you like about the neve? Don't get me wrong, I saw Sound City too, but I'm curious what your personal experience has been and why the neve is awesome. What did you use before it and why did you switch?

What makes for a great comp? EQ?

Great stuff guys! It sounds like EQ's are mostly physical. The right EQ is the one that physically handles the job. If I'm following, the right EQ is the one that targets and manipulates the frequency correctly. Yes? Not the one that adds flavor or style? It sounds like compressors are the...

    Acoustic Cave

This has to be a bad idea for some reason, right? What would happen if I built a little acoustic cave to surround my mic? We record 'live' so I obviously have a lot of bleed. I was thinking about cutting up some Owens Corning 703 and making a small surround, cave or box for my kick mic, etc...

What makes for a great comp? EQ?

I've been recording and mixing just long enough to know who to use the tools, but I not long enough to compare tools. I hear a lot of talk about a "great compressor" or a "really nice EQ". What does that mean to you? I know a "great compressor" makes all the difference.... When I'm compressing...

    Insert question

Weird. I had a similar insert question recently. What are the odds of two beagle names users asking a similar question? ...I thought this was my post at 1st!

How do you lay out your channels?

I'm a self-taught leftie, so I'm a little backwards. I have Vox on the left, than harmica, guitar, bass, kick, snare, and overheads. However, we just upgraded to a nicer board that's forced me to rearrange. Is anyone else constrained by the input types? I have 8 XLR inputs with Insert I/O's and...

Where do I start? Do I bother?

Wow. Is this what it's always like here? Thank you for your time. I greatly appreciate it. I apologize to the forum world. I'm really embarrassed it got this far. I just wanted tips (again, tips from multiple people before you reply and point out that you've given tips. I know you've given tips...

Where do I start? Do I bother?

Jiminy Crickets. Whiner? Total denial? Why throw around insults? Is that helping? Why are you fueling an unnecessary argument? " Whatever man, knock yourself out. I'm totally convinced you have no idea what you're doing, you're lying when you say you've worked in pro studios, and you're a bit...

Where do I start? Do I bother?

Seriously Rami? Is this really the place for this? What's the deal? Of course I know doing right from the ground up is the best way. I never said it wasn't. I've worked in pro studios. I get it. I didn't argue with you or imply you don't know what you're talking about. I never asked how to...

Where do I start? Do I bother?

Awesome! Thanks mjb and DM, that's the kind of stuff I'm looking for. What do I make a 'cloud' out of? Do I get it from Apple (jk)? Are the steep walls a problem? When you say corners, do you mean where 2 walls meet the floors, or speaker level? Is there any reason to hang plexi or build a low...

Where do I start? Do I bother?

Thanks for your input Rami and DM60. We know the 'live' sound is definitely not the best way to get a good recording but we're sticking with it for several reasons. I also know I may need bass traps and a 'strategy', that's why I asked about bass traps and a 'strategy' in my post. However, I...

Where do I start? Do I bother?

I have no experience building a studio or working with acoustic treatments. Here's the situation, we're a rock band with a drum kit, electric bass (Apeg SVT100), guitar (Messa Nomad), Vocals (house PA), and harmonica (small amp/house). We practice/write/record in the same room. It's a great size...

What's the deal with the Tape button?

We did, but it seems like everyone is giving their 'best guess' whereas I'm looking for actual information. Crowd sourcing only works if the crowd size is big enough to yield results.

Insert I/O or no Insert I/O

From what I understand, the Insert I/O is a TRS effects loops. The usage would be to plug your mic into your board, then run a loop from the Insert to your EQ/Comp/Etc. back to your insert. Correct? My question is: Why bother with the Insert loop? What do you gain (besides gain staging, no pun...

What's the deal with the Tape button?

Thanks for the input Beerhunter. I know they're probably returns, but returns from where? I've read the manual cover to cover, but I must be missing something. There's no hole in the back to plug in a Tape input.

What's the deal with the Tape button?

Good idea, but I don't think that's it. I do have Insert I/O on the 1st 8 channels, however I have tape buttons for all 24 channels. The Tape buttons do not seem to have any effect on the Insert. Plus, I can have Tape active at the same time as the Mic input.
