EQ then compress or Compress then EQ?

I can dig it. Thanks for all the perspective guys! I know there's no one way to do everything, but I don't have the luxury of time. I appreciate the tips and experience.

EQ then compress or Compress then EQ?

Henry, I'm starting to think that's the method. I've EQ-comp-EQ before, but not specifically cut-comp-boost. I like the sounds of that.

EQ then compress or Compress then EQ?

I'll admit, this forum has made me edgy. I have yet to see a thread that wasn't derailed. I don't understand the need for commentary. True, no one 'chastised me', but I knew when I started the topic that I'd have to defend myself in one way or another...and here we are. I don't understand why...

EQ then compress or Compress then EQ?

I've always thought it made sense to clean up the signal before you compress it, but I feel like a lot of mixers are compressing 1st as compressing will bring more issues to the surface. Greg, as near as I can tell, it's the 1st time this week, but hey, thanks for contributing to the...

EQ then compress or Compress then EQ?

I was hoping to make a poll, but I'm not savoy enough to pull it off. Do you compress an EQ'd signal or EQ a compressed signal (assuming you're both compressing and EQing a signal)?

1st Try Recording – Part II

Beer, I'm planning on keeping a log of what we play with notes as to what we hoped from each tune. Is that typical? I was just trying to make my life easier when I sit down to mix. Pictures would be nice. It'll only be the 4 of us, I'm tempted to ask someone else to come to get some live shots.

Good stuff guys, keep it coming!

1st Try Recording – Part II

That may be my biggest question, MJB. I can think of serious pros and cons to both methods, splitting tracks before mixing or after. Obviously final mix would done after splitting, but I'm on the fence as to how to start. How do most people do it? Is it too late to start a poll?

1st Try Recording – Part II

Yeah, thanks! That's already in process. I've been freeing up room on both my hard drive, and an external drive. I'm using this as an excuse to purge and it feels great. I plan to save a few iterations, just in case something goes wrong, I won't lose everything and I plan on backing up the...

1st Try Recording – Part II

Thanks to everyone who gave me tips for my 1st ‘Live’ recording session, I’ve noted them all. (For those just joining, I’m using Sonar X2 and a Tascam-1641 to record a blues-rock band in a live (but audience-free) setting. So, now I’ve got 14 tracks of live session. Ok, I won’t have them for...

    1st Try Live Recording Session

We're only getting one shot, I won't be able to set up a test run. I've been given a month in the theater, but there's only one day that works for the whole band......dang grown-ups and their schedules. To be honest, I'm skeptical about the 'room sound', but I want to cover my bases. That's why...

    1st Try Live Recording Session

Everyone's really into the idea of "Room Sound". We're close micing everything plus 2 room mics. I wasn't planning on bringing a PA, just a large monitor or 2. I'm not sure which direction we'll go when we get there. I think they guys are taking for granted how much sound moves in the theater...

    1st Try Live Recording Session

We're bringing a small, no frills mixer and I may run the vocals through the mixer to the 1641, and use the mixer to run the PA, but I only get 2 outs from the mixer (it doesn't have a DO for each channel). The 1641 has 2 stereo outs (I think I can run 4 mono outs if I try). My plan is to use...

    1st Try Live Recording Session

My last plea for help was very successful, and I get paid by the hour, so I thought I’d open this one up to the floor. In a couple weeks my grown-up, garage, blues-rock band will be recording in a 1,400 seat theater. We’ll have no audience and we’ll be recording/engineering all by ourselves...

    Where did my output go?

Update: Input Echo! It was JUST that easy. Thanks for the help guys. I knew it was either impossible, or right in front of my face. I avoided that button the other night because "echo" scared me off. Silly rabbit. Problem solved. Thanks for the tip boulder. I think we'll rearrange and keep the...

    Where did my output go?

What's the downside to vocal compression in the monitors? I thought the idea was to make the singer feel as comfortable as possible?

    Where did my output go?

Thanks Teddy! I remember seeing "Input Echo" in the preferences. I didn't bother playing with because "echo" scared me off. I hope that's it, I'll try it tonight. Boulder, if all goes perfect, I'm just running the Out1 into either a powered speaker or power amp. If not, the only mixer we can...

    Where did my output go?

Thanks Boulder, this certainly isn't an ideal setup, I know. We're just recording, no one will be in the audience, so I'm not worried about the 'performance' too much. We did end up splitting last night, however the only effects I can offer my vocalist come from Sonar. I don't really want him...

    Where did my output go?

Thanks for the input ido, I may not be explaining myself well. I'm not really trying to send anything to the Master, I just did that as a test. My issue is nothing seems to be outputting live. When I arm the vocal track, I want to hear it in the Output. Last night, nothing was audible during...

    Where did my output go?

Hi! Help! I usually use Calkwalk X2 for editing, not recording (I record on a Tascam DP24), however my band has an opportunity to record in a beautiful theater, so wanted to step up our game. I found us a used Tascam-1641 16ch interface so I can record 16 (14 actually as I learned) tracks, but...
