Total newbie question but it's also mixing...

I'm new myself, and I've been trying to avoid making real mix decisions using headphones, for several reasons talked about in this forum and in books and articles. What I will use headphones for is the kind of front-end editing and clean up like auditioning different takes and comping, checking...

    Interface with 2 guitar inputs

Well, if Win compatiblity is low priority (and why wouldn't it be if you're already an IOS and OSX cat), and you said nothing about budget, what about the Apogee Duet: Apogee Duet - 2 IN x 4 OUT USB audio interface for iPad and Mac, Logic, Pro Tools, Auria J

    Complete Noobie to recording

That's a great price on the US-1800. Make sure you get the Cubase disc from the seller. You're gonna use the Yamaha to control synth sounds on the computer, so no additional synth unless you want to buy additional software for that. No mixer, you'll do that in the DAW, and no preamp, the...

    Complete Noobie to recording

Hi Quinlin, Welcome. Hope you enjoy your delving. Your challenge as I see it is that your budget and your desire to record drums with 3 or 4 mics are not compatible. An audio interface with enough inputs is going to eat half your budget, and you don't have any mics yet. Just to get started...

    Recording Drums in Practice Room

I am also a noob and have recorded drums exactly 3 times. Based on that vast experience, I'm not sure I would bother with mattresses, etc - unless your room is somehow really awful. I used the Recorderman technique (easy to look up) for overheads (condensers) plus close dynamics on snare top...

    Sothern(ish), blues(ey) Rock & Roll. Feedback please!

That's good stuff. However, since it's already done, not sure why you are posting here? I'm guessing you're more interested in getting plays, facebook likes, tweets or whatever than actual feedback on your mix. J

    "Hiss" noise on vocal recording

Try turning down the gain on on the Scarlett preamp. You should be shooting for -18 to -12 dBFS on your recording software. Also make sure the 48V phantom power is turned on for your condenser mic. J

Any and all feedback welcome. Pop Country

I like the song, and I'm not a pop country guy. In addition to a little more panning needed, I think the snare is too up front. Nice sound on it, but really kinda hits you in the face. J

All That You Said - appreciate any feedback

I really like it. Love the guitar tones. The only thing for me is in the chorus, it seems crowded with the lead, backing vocals, and all the instruments up. Maybe I just want the lead vocal to cut through a little more. J

Please review - Riff The People

No, it wan't recorded live. The bass, uke, and guitars were recorded individually using drum sample beat and a click. The drums were recorded using a click track (I also had provided the drummer with an mp3 without the samples and with a click track to practice with. Vocals were added last...

Please review - Riff The People

Yeah... none of us are pros, but the drummer is, well, he's our drummer ;). In the only other song we've completed so far, I ended up using samples instead of his tracks. I feel bad since he bought the mic kit and US-1800 for me to record his drums. I just started mixing another one, it's...

Please review - Riff The People

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I'm not sure what wooly means, but I get eating the kick. I like the Tom Robinson reference. Before Todd Rundgren produced him? This was actually my first time recording and mixing drums, so just following what I read about panning. I will give that another...

Please review - Riff The People

Hi all, Please give this a listen, and some critical feedback on the mix. With regard to the song itself, the "band" members all work for a US defense contractor, except for the drummer who retired from there (lucky bustard), so this is basically, y'know, a phony reggae rant against the...

    Recording guitar talkbox effect

That's pretty cool. I like all the guitar tones. And my idea for the talkbox on my song is really to make it a different tone, and not to try to verbalize/make words. Kinda like Joe Walsh on Rocky Mountain Way, or him again with the Eagles on Those Shoes (except for the part where I think...

    Quick Compressor question

Check out this article. If you are using Logic Pro X, I believe ClassA_R and ClassA_U are now Stuido VCA and Studio FET. J

Thanks. I figured I would be using the 57 and closer in makes sense. J

    Recording guitar talkbox effect

Interesting idea. I was thinking when I expand my mic collection, a Green Bullet wouldn't be my first add. Maybe I'll hang around the local blues club and ask the harp player in the house band if I can borrow his. And his amp too.

    Recording guitar talkbox effect

I'm working on a new song and I was thinking a talk box - you know, the plastic tube in the mouth, Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh, etc. thing - would sound pretty cool in one section. The irony is I used to have one, the Dunlop, and after playing with it for about 15 minutes I decided it was the...

Live recording - Gold on the ceiling

That's nice... Good to hear young 'uns playing real music. Just the overheads on the drums? I thought the snare sounded good, but I wasn't hearing muck kick. J
