Question on Compressor Attack and Release times

Thanks BroKen for summing up this thread. As the OP I will say I appreciate all of the responses, and to the actual question - is there a generally accepted definition of fast, medium, slow? - the answer appears to be "No". Good to know, but a little disconcerting that experts who are writing...

    Country -ish tune

That's really nice. I like the guitar tone. Singer has a classic country voice. I thought the backing vocals on the chorus were too subtle. Is that the same singer processed through a chorus effect? I was just just expecting something more vocal-wise in the chorus for this genre. J

    MP3 sound levels

Are you actually trying to "master" an mp3 file? I wouldn't do that. You should be working with a wav file to do your pseudo-mastering with compression to increase overall loudness. Leave yourself at 0.6-1.0 db of headroom and then convert to mp3. J

Question on Compressor Attack and Release times

The more I use compression and the better I understand it's purpose and the goal I have for it, the better I'm able to hear the subtle differences - I'm not just talking about subjective loudness, and I don't have a good room. Kinda why I asked the question, if read a suggestion or how someone...

Question on Compressor Attack and Release times

Interesting. I've never heard/seen it explained that way, but doing some quick research on compressor designs gives me a better understanding in that regard, and I wouldn't expect a setting of 100 ms on one compressor to necessarily be the same thing on another compressor. Still, I wouldn't...

Question on Compressor Attack and Release times

I was reading an SOS Session Notes article by Mike Senior and he wrote in one instance (it happened to be a trombone) he used compression with a "medium" release time. I looked at the screen shot for the plug-in he used, and the release time was 400 msec. Now it might be my electrical...

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Vs apogee jam

The Jam and GarageBand on the iPad is part of what got me started on the home recording road journey. I thought when I got the iMac, the 2i2 and Logic X, I would still be plugging into the iPad to mess around or capture some ideas, say when my wife is using the iMac. That's why I bought the...

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Vs apogee jam

I use the 2i2 for guitar without any problems. Works fine with OSX and Logic. I have an Apogee Jam that I occasionally use with my iPAD, but not for any "keeper" recordings. J

    Mixing board VS audio interface?

You just need an audio interface. The Focusrite would be a good choice, and there a few others in that range. I'm not familiar with Komplete product. J

Resources and methods for improving on guitar

Check out Guitar Techniques Magazine | MusicRadar It's UK based. It is available on iPad via the Newsstand, not sure about other tablets. Much better (and cheaper) than the print version because you can just tap on the screen to hear the examples or backing tracks vs. managing a CD player...

What is your earliest musical memory ?

The Monkees, not sure exaclty what song - probably all of them. I was probably 6 years old. There were these plastic toy badminton racquets in the house and my friends and I would use them to pretend to play guitar, and sing along with Davy and the boys. Then I became aware there was a real...

Allen Heath ZED 436. A workflow question.

I don't think there's a way to do what your asking, if I understand correctly. Not sure why you would want to either - anything you could do on the board you could in a DAW and more. Unless you're just trying to make use of that expensive mixer somehow, someway. J

Check out Interactive Frequency Chart - Independent Recording Network In addition to showing where various instruments sit in the audio spectrum and defining bass, mids, etc., it shows where terms such as "tinny" and "mud" sit. J

    Recording Equipment

What Bobbsy said... read, Google, read what you Google, learn about different types of mics and their application, mic placement techniques, compression, EQ... figure out your budget and what gear, software, computer, etc. fits. Curious, though, why are you waiting a year to put 5-10 songs...

    Anyone play ukulele?

I have an Epiphone Les Paul uke. I was going to buy a traditional uke in the $150 range, but I saw this thing and it cracked me up. $99, plus whatever I paid to upgrade the strings. I haven't played it much recently but did record a song with it - a phoney reggae number with it plugged in...

    Recording bass guitar

Yep, use a bass guitar if that's the sound you want. If you don't own or play one (like me) find someone who does. What you're talking about is a bass synth, which is fine for some genres. J

What was the first song you learned to play ?

I played King of the Road for a piano recital when I was about 9. That was a triumphant moment. Then I quit piano. Guitar was either Smoke On The Water or Eighteen.

    The Fender Rhodes Sound

GarageBand on the Mac doesn't have an Electric Piano that can be made to sound Rhodes-like? I'm not with my Mac, so can't check myself. But GB on iPad has an Electric Piano instrument... I'd check what you already have, especially if you just want to hear what it might sound like vs...
