    Nasty, over-the-top 60 cycle hum

Sounds like a grounding problem. I would notify the landlord and tell them it's a safety issue. Don't want little kiddies getting shocked...

    Advice on Sound

That's really nice. Good performance. My only comment is that I would bring the guitar down just a tad in level when the vocals are up. Probably not throughout - just some fader automation to dip it spots. Jim

    Stereofonique, a pop/dance tune

I'd like to hear/feel more low-end weight on the kick. There are some opportunities to add interest with more pronounced rise-and-drop effect, e.g. around 2:25. J

    Mixing midi track

You don't have to convert your MIDI to audio for mix down, but it's good practice. It can reduce CPU load and minimize any sync issues with a real-time software instrument. Plus you're less likely to want to tweak the performance or the instrument patch (but you still can if you really want to).

    Compatibility issues

Check the IK, MOTU and Slate web sites to see if they have any compatibility statements (maybe in a Support section or forum). I just received an email yesterday from NI saying their products are compatible with El Capitan. You'll probably need to update your Komplete. 4 GB RAM is the...

    Best tambourine ?

I spent a nearly an hour one day searching through tambourine loops and samples, and different kit pieces in Logic's Drum Kit. Then I remembered I own a tambourine, and a microphone. Sounds like a tambourine, and with the ultimate rhythmic control! J

Setting up my studio advice?!?!? SV-1, Prophecy, audio interface?

I have an iMac, Logic, Scarlett 2i2, and M-audio BX-5s and am quite happy with my setup. I will be upgrading from the BX-5s soon, but they served their purpose well as low-entry level monitors while I figured things out. If you want to capture MIDI from your HW synths, or track more than two...

    Automations

I automate mute quite a bit to bring instruments in and out of the mix. I probably do that as much as I automate levels. The other day I decided to add a wah pedal sim to an already recorded track. Once I figured out how to map the pedal position control to the mod wheel on my keyboard, I was...

    annual licenses

Why do you guys think you "own" your plugins now? As with virtually all software products, you don't buy the software, you buy a license to use it. Quite often, the license is granted to you alone, and you can't legally sell it to anyone else - check the license agreement for the particulars...

Vocals Record Quietly Even Though Monitoring Fine

Are you sure you have your DAW set to record the mic channel (probably input 2) from the Lexicon?

Dreams Never Die *NEO SOUL* ft. Debbie Mcneill

The bass seems a bit weak and it disappears during the rap verses. Maybe something a little more synth-y sounding, and a different pattern under the rap. I'll second what Robus said about the rap rhythm in my own way I guess - that is the rhymes should really "snap" with the rhythm. I don't...

Synth Recording Issue (Logic Pro X)

If you just want to capture the midi out of the keyboard, then I don't know why you also need to record an audio track at the same time. Are you saying the drum sounds are showing up on the midi track or the audio track?

Synth Recording Issue (Logic Pro X)

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do. If you just want to record the audio out of the synth, you don't need a Software Instrument track, just an audio track. What synth and audio interface are you using?

    Volume leveling

I'm not sure you're saying this is your problem, but I struggled with getting an initial, static balance while leaving enough headroom for proper mixing. Then I read this article that suggests using pink noise as a reference. So I generally follow those guidelines, and then when I have a fader...

I don't know where to start!

I do "loudness processing" on the stereo output bus in the same session as the mix. I won't even use the word "mastering" for what I do. I have a limiter on the output bus from the get go, but that's just protection initially. At some point during mixing I will want to hear how it sounds...

    sidechain compression

A typical use is "ducking" one signal under another. Sidechaining the kick drum to the bass guitar's compressor so that the bass is attenuated when the kick drum is hit is fairly common. The side chain usually has a filter on it so you can be selective about frequency ranges will trigger the...

Hip-Hop Instrumental In Need of Experienced Feedback

Listen to as many commercial tracks in the style/genre you are interested in and try emulate what they do. I don't know what DAW or VSTis you are using, but look for a "humanize" control or a "swing" setting - this will adjust the MIDI playback so that every hit is not exactly on the grid...

Hip-Hop Instrumental In Need of Experienced Feedback

Before you worry too much about mixing, EQ, and stereo vs mono I suggest spending more time on composing and arranging. You have a 3 and a half or more minute drum loop that is base simple and never changes. Throw in some fills and breaks. Try to find a melody to play or maybe rap something...
