Warm Audio Bus Comp - ratio backwards?

It's hard to say how the mixer treated all the connections...but I think it was mostly at the bay where things were messed up. Sometimes things can be hooked up "wrong"...and it all works right...but in general, I think it's best to adopt a more accepted protocol, and then just stick to it...

    Analog-digital integrated setups?

When deciding what between 1/4" and XLR...? Typical gear patchbays come in 1/4" and TT/Bantam...which is like a mini-1/4", usually what's found in pro studios because you get more points/patchbay. AFA phantom power...if you include the inputs of your preamps on the bays...you have to take some...

Warm Audio Bus Comp - ratio backwards?

The snake is wired unbalanced at both the bay and the gear end for the unbalanced gear. So at the balanced TRS bay, you would wire both signal leads to the Tip/Hot, and the shield/ground to the Sleeve connections and nothing for the Ring...and at the gear end, you would wire the two leads to the...

    At All Volumes

Yes...that's true, and with greater track counts on tape as wider formats and new machines came along...there was more room for that. However...I still think those studio sessions were more about capturing the sounds in the studio. Page wasn't tracking 37 guitar parts DI, so he could then sit a...

Warm Audio Bus Comp - ratio backwards?

It's not a grounding issue as in AC electrical grounding issue...it's a signal grounding issue that you are creating with the unbalanced snakes. Mmm...is the patch bay balanced capable...is it a TRS bay? It's easier/better to add unbalanced gear into a balanced patchbay setup...then adding...

    At All Volumes

You're answering your own question. :) I don't think there's any real "secret"...as if it was some production or processing method that they had back then. If anything, what they had back then, would be considered pretty basic by the capabilities to manipulate and process sound in today's ITB...

    The sound of the piano

Like some have said...if I can hear the individual piano tracks that are more than say, just R&R chords getting pounded... :D...yeah, I can tell the difference. In a busy mix with more subtle parts, not as much if I'm listening to someone else's stuff...but when I use sims or electric pianos in...

Warm Audio Bus Comp - ratio backwards?

I think you can kinda look at like...at lower ratios, it's a smooth, gradual compression ramp-up, so the gain reduction is obvious early...and at the high ratios, it becomes more of a limiter, as the knee becomes steeper, so it takes more signal to reach it before it grabs the top of the signal...

After seven years of DAW, I will NEVER abandon tape again.

Come to Jesus, wayward brother. :D No need to now abandon digital...it has its good points too. The folks who never abandoned analog, but instead brought digital into the fold...found the best of both worlds. Amen.

1” 30ips MRL Calibration tape for trade for 15ips version

You know...I glanced over that quickly in the MRL notes...and I thought that's what they were saying, but I didn't quite register it. Basically, for that scenario...they say at either speed, it will be flat. ******************************** Table 5-1 For any Calibration Tape and any Desired...

    Analog-digital integrated setups?

I would go with a patchbay, rather than Y-cables...you could normal one setup, and only use some patch cables at the bay when you want to go to the other setup....plus, you would probably have room on the patchbay for some other gear, making it quite useful as the main hardware routing location...

1” 30ips MRL Calibration tape for trade for 15ips version

Your best bet...contact MRL...and tell them the exact tape you have, and ask which conversion would get you where you want to go, or if it's possible with your tape. mrltapes@comcast.net 408-227-8631

    New, Old Stock Headphones Question

Did you get the 80 Ohm or 250 Ohm version? Apparently, the 80 will push out less treble, so consequently, you can turn it up more and end up with fatter bass, which is what a lot of folks prefer when just using the phone to music listening...but the 250 will be more even, and so you get more...

1” 30ips MRL Calibration tape for trade for 15ips version

Or...you could just use the same 30" tape and follow the numbers in the MRL conversion charts. http://www.mrltapes.com/choo&u.pdf http://mrltapes.com/eqtables.txt

Guitar -> direct to Interface or something in between for "Dry" recording ?

By all means go with what you want...but I couldn't help but chuckle about you being excited to reamp and not having to commit...at the creative stage. :D I've had a reamp setup for like 10 years now...actually, more than one option, and I have quite an assortment of really great guitar...

    New, Old Stock Headphones Question

Yeah...it took awhile for me to give up XP. At my day gig, they moved to Vista...then Win7...and were starting the move to Win8 before I switch to Win7, only because the network/security guys were saying XP was no longer going to be allowed on the network. :D Win7 is quite good...move to it...

    New, Old Stock Headphones Question

I think you can still get the appropriate pads for those: sony mdr-v600 replacement pads - Google Search I'm not sure if I ever tried that Sony model...but I remember back than when Sony came out with a few models for studio use...and TBH...I thought they all sounded horrible...very harsh in...

    Tracking Levels- hmmm?

I love when these types of discussions come to some generic conclusion...do or get whatever you think works for you, and if you like it, then it must be good! :D Well...I guess that's one approach, and it does reduce what people "need"...because they can live within their limitations, and...

    New, Old Stock Headphones Question

So when you bought the second pair 16 years ago...you never even checked them for a few minutes...you just put the unopened box away? I would say that if you HAD checked them 16 years ago, and they sounded about the same...but now they don't...then maybe your old pair have truly been "worn in"...

    solder station

I'm sure Dave wouldn't buy a crappy soldering station...and you're right, I've not heard of the brand before, but I guess it's making its way westward. I've always opted for the single irons, different wattages and sizes, instead of the stations...only because most times I've got to get in...
