    ADAT cable failure

I'm now inclined to think that the bad cables got kinked somehow because all connections were tight & undisturbed for months once in place. With replacements, all is working as it should.

VST not loading in Audition 3

I'm running Windows 7. I've told it to restart, which is not a complete shutdown because power is still on. I've also told it to shut down and then cut the power at the source no juice going into the computer at all. The problem remains even when I power back up and reboot.

VST not loading in Audition 3

I'm running Windows 7 - no updates are possible anymore. It's definitely an Audition 3 problem for sure. All other DAWS see all the UAD plugins. Audition did but now doesn't. What do you mean by "properly restarting the machine." You either tell it to restart or to shut down completely...

VST not loading in Audition 3

I'm using the appropriate driver version for what I have. I don't update unless absolutely necessary. I have changed nothing. It worked one day and got weird the next.

VST not loading in Audition 3

A few days ago Audition 3 stopped finding a few of my UAD plugins. Rescanning the VST folders and refreshing the plugins list doesn't solve the problem. My other DAW programs have no such trouble so I know it's within Audition. Anyone else ever experience this? If so, how did you solve it?

    ADAT cable failure

Whatever happened, it was not because the cables had been disturbed from their "as installed" run. I'll be moving things around so I can use a much shorter one with new cables ASAP.

    ADAT cable failure

I had 2 ADAT/toslink cables die on me yesterday. They stopped transmitting data. Fortunately, I have spares but am curious as to what might have caused their demise.

Anyone understand DAT machines??? (Tech question)

I don't know. See how they behave when moistened with head cleaner. If they shed or fall apart, then no. Make sure they are by themselves chemical free.

Anyone understand DAT machines??? (Tech question)

Cleaning would be my 1st course of action. If you don't have a cleaning tape, which will often work in a pinch, you need to open the unit up. Never use cotton swabs on a DAT. You need non-shedding foam or shammy-tipped swabs moistened with a good head cleaner. Clean the capstan & guides...

    Tascam MS-16 1"

I'm going on what one of their consultants experienced when he set the bias to run elevated levels on his 3340S. I can't recall but either his record or erase head went south after a few hours. TEAC told him the head couldn't take that much bias current.

    Tascam MS-16 1"

No they did not. Running that hot messes with the dbx. Don't do it. You run the risk of toasting the head cores.

NOS 3M 966 1” Mastering Tape: bake or not?

The only way to know is see how the tape behaves on your machine. If you hear any kind of mechanical squeal or excess friction as it plays, get it away from the heads & off of the machine.

NOS 3M 966 1” Mastering Tape: bake or not?

I think you mean 996. Regardless, if a tape has sticky-shed, don't use it for production even after baking. It's a false economy. Get new tape.

    Dbx type 1..

If you are losing top end with dbx, you are probably printing too hot. It's a common mistake and the primary one that has given dbx a bad name.

    Dbx type 1..

Neither dbx nor dolby for that matter, will reduce hiss that is already part of a recording. IMHO and experience, not using your internal dbx II on your multitrack is a bad idea. I'll never understand the romance with saturation. Even if you like it, it's temporary. The more passes of the...

    Tascam PortaOne...and XLR inputs?

Wrong. The unit only has 1/4" inputs but there is enough gain at the input stage for adequate if not stellar performance.

    M3500 and +4 Outs

The Warm EQP-WA has 1/4" in/outs so there's no need for a an XLR to TS cable or adaptor. As I recall, the M3500 has rca jacks for the send/receives so a pair of rca to 1/4" adaptors will suffice.

    slapback recipe?

If all else fails, copy the track, paste it to another in your session, & nudge it to where you like it. Then put the gain where it fits your desired mix.
