Why Did Ampex Change Tape Formula?

Never heard about 3M 256. What were the specs? Was it also low noise/high output?

Can anyone suggest a 1” tape brand/type NEW for Tascam m-3500 plus MS-16?

Operating level and bias are interdependent as far as I know. If you don't align for anything higher, the TASCAM units should be able to bias @ 3db over @ 10kHz. At elevated levels, all bets are off. BTW - This "Tape Saturation" stuff is sonic bull, IMHO. Nobody I knew wanted it back in the...

Can anyone suggest a 1” tape brand/type NEW for Tascam m-3500 plus MS-16?

Are you sure about that? If set up for 250nWb/m, an MS-16 should be able to provide enough bias current. At least that's what I was told. Just because a tape can handle "+ godknowswhat" doesn't mean you have to go that route.

Can anyone suggest a 1” tape brand/type NEW for Tascam m-3500 plus MS-16?

Set tape & machine up for 250 nano-webers per meter. That's what the machine was designed for. Anything hotter will just run you out of headroom faster than you want.

    Tape Squealing Problem

The tape more than likely has sticky-shed syndrome and needs to be baked. Tapes in that condition are very hard on the transport and can in extreme cases, destroy heads in one pass.

Do Tape head cleaner or rubber conditioner go bad?

The original TEAC head cleaner was not alcohol based. If the bottle is sealed, it should still be good.

    B&O BM6

Long ribboned mics of that era are quite delicate and should be handled carefully. Shaking them will damage the ribbon as will being exposed to excessive transients or blasts of air. I'd find out the cost of having a pro fix it because if you get in it and destroy the motor, you'll just end up...

Large or small condenser overheads for a bad room with good drums

I never use overheads in a bad room, preferring to close mic all drums and let the combined leak capture the cymbals.

Remove the interior foam that conforms to the 58 grille and the 2 will sound pretty much the same.

Burned project into a CD-R and no sound

Audio CD spec calls for burning 16bit wav files to CDA files. Anything else burned to CDR will play on a computer but not an audio CD player.

    Question about dx4d

I don't know about the control compatibility but my point is that there is no reason to put the unit back to stock. If modded to have both encode and decode on at all times, it will work with any recorder it's patched into. Furthermore, without having to wait for whatever switch time is...

    Question about dx4d

If the unit has been modded, there is not reason to use the control cable. Just hook up the in/outs properly and use it.

Conveniently using stereo equipment in mono with a patch bay?

The RNC can be operated in stereo or single mono but not dual mono. The left channel input controls the gain reduction of both channels.
