I have a 424MkII. To make sure you don't have this problem use the direct feature on the RECORD FUNCTION section. This ties your channels and tracks together. Channel 1 to Track 1, 2 to 2, etc. Make sure you put the finished tracks in SAFE mode before recording the next part.

Depending on your 4 track you may not need the extra mixer. The 424 and most other Tascams allow you to assign all inputs to the same track while monitoring the other tracks for overdubbing. But if you are going for the simultaneous tracking, then you will need the extra mixer. We used to...
