    So, You Can't Hear...

I do consider my soundcard suspect, but I don't doubt I have hearing loss. Thanks for the other responses. I considered using a SA, and treating anything that looked horrific. I don't mix with my eyes, but how much trouble could I really cause my self at 18750Hz?

    So, You Can't Hear...

Just took one of those online tone-generator tests on the lappy through my Senn HD280's. About what I'd feared, things start getting quieter at 13k, I have total silence (other than the constant peel of tinnitus) from 17k up. I guess since, if what I've read is accurate, the great old tape...

need new saddles for my les paul

    1. Fire your tech. There is no reason to be re-slotting saddles for set-ups. 2. Your bridge is not an ABR-1, it is a "Nashville." The replacement bridge will probably fit your posts. 3. The bridge is not a likely cause of tuning problems, but the graphite saddles will result in a warmer/darker...

    Practice Recording Help!

Just turn down the instrument that is too loud. Problem solved.

    Muttley/Light...

A big +1 on utilizing tonewoods as a resource. If a tropical/subtropical landowner can sell a few hundred trees to North American or European builders, for a multiple of the potential crop yield of a given hunk of rainforest, they aren't likely to burn down a few thousand acres of it, are they...

    Ruby Reverb (Blues Jr.)

Odd. I took a Ruby out of my Crate V33, where it was terrible.

Mackie Onyx 1640i or two MOTU 8pre + Mixer?

Adding a hardware mixer to one or more 8pres is not a cost-effective improvement. The 8pres ship with perfectly adequate software mixers, and whatever you are using for a DAW will have plenty of mixing options anyway. Adding a mixer only gives you physical faders to work with, but also layers an...

Electric Guitars That Are Good and Cheap (Help)

I don't see too much complaining about either Rondo or Xaviere guitars, considering how many are sold. The real problem is stuff like feel, neck shapes, etc. Xaviere necks run a little flatter/modren, Rondo's lean rounder. I think the X's have better electronics out of the box, something like an...

    30w-50w gainy heads?

I know it's not exactly what you asked for, but running an ADA MP1 into the effects return of a JCM900 is thrashy as hell. Instant Scott Ian for cheap. Take the chassis out of the headshell, build a plywood box for the head and preamp, and it's just as portable as a head alone.

    d-string sounds wobbly?

Interesting! I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

    d-string sounds wobbly?

First guess: pickup's too close to the strings, and the magnet is interfering with vibration. Second: bad string. Third, bad nut slot or saddle, you just didn't notice before, or it just started.

    Delay stomp box

Check. DE7 will be fine, and it does both digital delay and fake echo. Get a used wah for modulation (fake chorus a la White Room and Dazed and Confused). I'm a little stumped for a truly good, cheap dirt box. You may have to man up and spend a little money there. Figure used market pricing...

    Delay stomp box

Actually, I specifically mentioned the DE7 due to it's echo/delay switch: in echo mode it's kind of analog-like, and will self-oscillate, although I've heard the charge leveled that it simulates/synthesizes oscillation. I do have the Carbon Copy, and it's absolutely lush. If you're building a...

Write a new blurb for this board

"How to make your mix louder."

    Delay stomp box

The least expensive analog delays are about 140-150 USD right now. Guitarfetish is rolling out a line of pedals in a couple of months, including a supposedly analog delay for about $60. As for cheap delays that don't suck, the Ibanez DE7 won't hurt you too badly. I don't know about the parallel...

    help a newbie out...

That's a pretty fair guess. The board is heavily populated with industry professionals, some of them suffer directly from software theft. You won't receive "customer service" for cracked downloads here. Fortunately, the web is crawling with good free and low-cost software, so there's no real...

What is the cheapest way to record in your opinion

You could try a Zoom H2. They are going as low as $150 new, so they should be available used for $100. They have a lot of limitations, but sound pretty good, and can transfer files to your computer or be used as an interface, IIRC. The really good part: they're handy as all get-out as a little...

more bang/less buck Hi Hat recomondations

Used New Beats can be found for $100 or less pretty regularly. Dream Bliss and Contact lines have some good stuff, they're in the beginner price range, but solid performers, when you find a good one. Try to find a place where you can listen before you buy, or has an extremely loose exchange policy.
