    Getting lousy sound!!! HELP!!!

Wood you mind telling us what's knot sounding right? That 4x12 usually has a pleasingly woody tone. The guitar's known to have a pleasing timber.

Help with Mic for my voice.

I'm still fairly new to this too, but I think you'll get a fair number of affirmatives on the SM7 & DMP3. The SM7 is a dynamic but I've seen many threads where people have stated they use it for 90% of the vocals they record regardless of range/style.

    Electric condensers Vs transformless

I'll admit that I'm clueless on the rest but as far as I know, the Beta 57 is a dynamic mic, not a condenser. Maybe this will give you a bump so you can get your answer.

    Favorite Blues Pedal

You might also try the Visual Sound Route 66. It's a compressor and TS808 circuit built into one pedal at a nice price.

How to lower the strings on guitar

I hear what you're saying and don't entirely know how to explain myself except to say that I speak from experience. Perhaps it's the fact that the string has to travel less distance from unfretted to fretted, but it does in fact make a difference. I know I'm the new guy on the boards and have...

How to lower the strings on guitar

Well, the strings are closer to the pickups now so it may be wise to drop them a little to compensate. And yes, usually lowering the strings has effect on the intonation. Best way to intonate is to use a very accurate tuner, tune open and then at the 12th fret. If it's flat at the 12th, you...

    Recommended Pickup for Rock Music

Shielding is a good suggestion. I'm personally not a fan of 'buckers in a strat but I guess that's the purist in me. One pickup I can flat out tell you to avoid is Fender's Samarium Cobalt Noiseless... to me they're Samarium Cobalt Toneless. I had a Hwy 1 strat that I sold not too long ago...

My amp gives off a smell...

I had an Ampeg Reverberocket that gave off that 'new amp' smell from the vinyl glue for YEARS after about an hour of use. There was nothing wrong with it -- the glue was just really stinky. Is this a new occurrence? The transformer running too hot is not something you can assess visually, but...

Thougts on the PRS SE series?

I've played a few at GC. I've honestly been less than impressed. I much prefer the Ibanez ARC300 if you can find one anymore.

    fret buzz on drop-tuning

The cheapest way to fix it is to loosen the truss rod and put up with the fact that you may have to gorilla-grip it. Of course this can introduce intonation problems but if you're not playing too far up the neck, it may not be enough to matter. Some might say to go with a heavier bottom string...

    Recording Vocals Tips

Is it an ART Tube MP? I used to have one and it was EXTREMELY noisy. You might try unplugging the mic cable from the ART and see if the hum is still there. Turn the ART output all the way down and if the hum goes away, it's almost certainly the culprit.

    Mic upgrade opportunity

I'm nervous to even reply because I'm so new here and new to recording. But one thing I've learned here, at other forums, and from looking at what my favorite bands record with is that spending a huge amount of money on a vocal mic doesn't always pay off. Granted, most vocalists use something...

Differences in sonic qualities of Naiant X-Q and X-M?

Just looking at the specs, I don't think you'd see a big difference. I'm willing to be the capsule is the same on both. The only major benefit I see to the X-M is the flexibility of transformer/active output and a little less of a bump above 10K. I'm considering an X-Q for a room mic myself...

Help me deGAS - is a new budget LDC worth it?

Sorry -- you're right, it IS the other way around... the pencil 991 for guitar, MDC 990 (if that's even a designation) for vox. I don't think they're spectacular either, just workable--I'm just wondering if a mic that's $50 more is going to be worth buying another.

Help me deGAS - is a new budget LDC worth it?

Hello, All. I'm (clearly) new to the community here --been lurking a while but no posts. My current setup is very basic: Mics: MXL990, MXL991 Pre-amp: M-Audio AudioBuddy Audio Interface: Line6 Toneport UX1 It's just me and my acoustic guitar. I play southern alt-country/americana music a la...
