Worst Piece(s) of Gear You've Purchased

"Samson CO1 LDC" -I will second this. I picked one up ages ago, juts to see what it was like, and to see if something that budget could be decent. Relatively high noise factor, and distorts pretty easily. Not sure what else to say about it. It can sound ok, but there are better buys out there...

My plate reverb - Image and sound sample

Very cool. Sounds nice with your guitar work too. I like seeing home built/crafty stuff when it comes to music, it's just neat!

    Recording in 90's

"CD players first hit the stores around 1982 and took only a couple of years to become "mainstream"" Really? Man, I didn't get a CD player until the early 1990s... dammit! The ST, I am pretty sure was sold up into the early 90s... pretty sure the ST magazine ran until '92...for year of...

    Mic Debate.

Aaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhh! Lol. Ok, after a bunch of researching, I think I nailed down what I want to do. I have read a lot of nice things about the MXL 960 model. I like tube stuff... mostly, I miss my NTK... buuuut... I figure if I take the MXL 960, toss in a Peluso capsule, and...

    Recording in 90's

" where did the time go? " I wonder this myself. While I am not as old as some of the folks on here... sometimes, I feel a little amused by those younger than myself. Yeah, sorry, I recall LPs, VHS, Betamax, cassettes.... CDs were a really big thing for me when they became mainstream...

    Distortion Problems.

Actual level I am unsure about. I keep it out of the red. Been experimenting around. Try to keep it in the yellow to orange range in reaper. I keep the levels low enough to not clip the pre, as that will sound really, really nasty.

    Distortion Problems.

I am using an ART 2 channel USB interface/preamp, but only as an interface. It's USB 2.0 and all that (I'd be surprised if anything created these days wasn't up to current standards). The tube preamp out goes to the left channel. Using XLR cables. Should I be using balanced TRS or something? It...

    Distortion Problems.

It's not so much a mix as it is just playing back vocal takes that I am doing as experimentation to try to find the best levels, etc.

    Mic Debate.

I personally would like to know more as well. I find all kinds of mic mods... but no detailed explanations of how some of the stuff is done. I read about Capacitor swaps, but don't get much info on what types of capacitors to grab, how many to swap. I read about transformer swaps, but there are...

    Distortion Problems.

But when I say punch it, I meant vocally. When I get a little louder, it tends to fuzz out. When I say crank it, I mean pushing the fader up. Lol. Though I would bet that there is some serious fault with my speakers. LOL.

    Distortion Problems.

"Seriously, though, how can you expect to tell how something sounds when all you're listening to and working with it on is an old pair of computer speakers that you yourself describe as "jack-shit"?" -Because for now it is literally all I have :P An upgrade to the audio output is planned...

    Distortion Problems.

Hey all. It seems no matter what I do, or what I record with, I end up with distortion issues. The rub is I am even keeping my preamp levels low, both the gain, and the output knobs are only cranked 1/4 of their range (gain goes up to 75 on my pre, using my interface as strictly that), and...

    Mic Debate.

OK, here is another possibility, and a pretty strong one at that. The MXL V67g is supposed to be another model that outperforms its price point. It can also be modified, read a little about something called a Royer mod, I think it involves using a tube circuit. The V67g is very affordable...

    Any preamp buildders?

I definitely gotta check out Prodigy-pro, and the listed models. I also found a schematic for a multi-tube pre. Probably more complex than I can do myself... but that is what tapping into others brains is for. Thanks for the information guys... got some searching to do.

    Mic Debate.

So, after much more searching, I would say that there are a couple mics in the running... which one ends up being purchased is really a matter of what the budget looks like in a couple months. First, if I am well off, the GT57 looks like a good choice BUUUUT the MD1B condenser looks like a very...

    Monitors or Cans?

"since their public showrooms usually suck when it comes to making sure your not trying to compare apples to oranges, so you promise to keep all the boxes and packing intact until you have tested them at home for sure, so can return and exchange them for something else if need be." -Yeah, their...

How to remove a nasal/plugged up sound?

Here is a brief speech level clip to illustrate more how I sound "normally." Pretty much always stuffy.

    Any preamp buildders?

Hey all. First post in the DIY/Homebrew/Modshop... I have a friend who dabbles pretty heavily in homebrewing his own gear. We were talking last night about building some of our own kit, and modding other stuff to suit our desires. The topic of modding my Ballari Mp105 came up. I know that...

How to remove a nasal/plugged up sound?

I'll post up a clip of just speech level sound. Just to show what I mean a bit better. While I admit that there may be some flaws in technique, I will also say that how I am singing feels fine. Though that could also simply be because that is the way I have been doing it for years. But because I...

How to remove a nasal/plugged up sound?

Actual vocal coaching would be an eye opener I am sure. Most of what I know I have either learned from reading, doing, or actually working with choirs. Pity my prof, who was an excellent singer, couldn't really give one on one time.
