Looking for new OH mics -- any suggestions?

I currently use a pair of these for overhead drum micing. Sometimes I think they make the crash cymbals sound pinched off. I've looked at buying a pair of AKG c451b's but they are out of my price range. Is there any pair of mics between $500 and $650 that would do well as overheads?

    Epic Fail !

Never use a laptop to run outboard effects for a live mix. The latency can seriously screw up your sound.

    Let's get rid of autotune

Most teenagers 12-25 who are non-musicians. That seems to be the target demographic for radio & recorded music these days. I believe that Auto-Tune has its place in pop, hip-hop, dance and electronic music, but not in more "traditional" genres. I'm really more concerned about the...

    Macbook Pro buying strategy

I have no choice but to buy a macbook pro this summer. The university im going to requires it for all music production and technology majors. That, along with a small audio interface and pro tools 9.

    ARRGHH! Need new recording PC

Build your own, if you can. You can buy all the parts OEM and have complete control of performance needs. Plus, no bloatware. My studio PC (custom built obviously) will be 4 years old in July and has never had a problem.

    Sound recording training / education

Damn, the facilities at Full Sail look spectacular. Then again, it's not the equipment so much as it is the producer. ;)

PreSonus FireStudio Project or Focusrite Pro 40

I used to have a Firestudio Project and had no problems w/ it. It has 2 firewire ports on it so you can daisy chain other Firestudio devices to it at your whimsy :)

Ok so i need some feedback and you guys know your stuff

Drums/aux percussion feel a bit too "roomy". Bass could use a lot more low end. Lead vocals and overall darkness of the tunes reminds me of Three Days Grace. Guitar/guitar riffs remind me of RHCP.

    Mixing an Acoustic Guitar, pointers?

You shouldn't need to perform any drastic eq changes if your mic placement is good. If anything, maybe just a 1.5db hi-shelf beginning at like 2.5k to get the sound of the strings being strummed to cut through a little more. In other words, keep it simple. If things get out of hand, re-track...

How do you get your drums to sound brighter?

Tuning, mic. configuration and mic. placement. That's what gets me the best results. It's amazing how much my drum kit sound has improved since I really started getting into this about a year ago.

    Sterling ST51. Keep or Return?

I have an ST55. It's okay. It'll suffice for most users but last time I used it during a session the vocals sounding kinda scratchy.

    Civil Disobedience, Say Hey

Sax was done w/ a 57. Sound is very live because it was tracked in my basement where there's nothin' but concrete. But the control room sounds worse and much more hollow.

Got any suggestions on an Audio/MIDI Interface?

What kind of work are you looking to do? Are you planning to record just yourself or a rock band?

    Do you pan your bass?

I usually don't pan the bass for more "traditional" recordings (aka most mainstream stuff). If you're going for a more spatial kind of experience and the instrumentation isn't to high in terms of numbers, then by all means, have at it. In most stereo jazz recordings I have that are from the...

    Compressor Setting Suggestions While Tracking?

LOL Rob Thomas's voice isn't exactly what you call "soft". But I like Matchbox Twenty just the same. I'd limit your compression to top-level only. Just to prevent clipping. You don't want the dynamics of the instruments to be flattened like a pancake. It's easy to do it that way but you...

Connecting up a rack (compressor, pre-amp, mixer, audio interface) in order to record

I second the motion;) I recently went rackless, as in no outboard compression. Just mic -> pre -> AD/DA -> DAW. It was starting to become a bitch to set up correctly because once outboard compression is recorded, there's no way to get rid of it. Now I add in compression once in the mixing...

    Panning for 2 tracks onliy

You could compromise and go 50L/50R (guitar/vox) and use reverb to fill in the gaps. Just a thought.

Drum panning? L to R or or R to L?

I pan the OH based on how it blends with the rest of the instruments in the mix although my personal preference is to have the hi-hat between 50-80L and crash about 75-95 R.
